Rigg and Vlasich highlight SCIAC postseason award selections for CMS; six named All-SCIAC

PASADENA, Calif. – After a 23-win regular season and a second place finish in the conference standings, six Claremont-Mudd-Scripps volleyball players have been selected to the All-SCIAC volleyball teams, the conference announced on Nov. 5. In addition, head coach Kurt Vlasich has been named as the conference's Coach of the Year and freshman middle blocker Mariah Rigg is the Newcomer of the Year.

In four seasons as head coach of the CMS program, Vlasich has led the team to an 84-32 record including 42 wins in conference play. The second place regular season finish for CMS in 2014 is the team's best finish in SCIAC play under Vlasich. With 23 wins in 2014, the team is two wins short of the school record of 25 which was set last season.

Rigg is the second Athena in a row to take home Newcomer of the Year honors. Sophomore Nicole Kerkhof was named Freshman of the Year in 2013. Rigg leads the team in total blocks (73) and is second in blocks per set (0.77) to go along with 151 kills on the season. She also leads the conference in hitting percentage (.379) and is in the top-10 in total blocks and blocks per set.

Senior libero Megan Coleman and junior opposite Audrey Breitwieser each were selected to the first team. Coleman ranks 15th nationally in digs per set (5.91) and is 37th in total digs (567) and is tops on the team and in the conference in those categories as well. This is the third All-Conference selection for Coleman (2011, 2013, 2014). Breitwieser is the Athenas' leader in kills (300) and she ranks sixth in the conference in that category. She is also in the top-10 in SCIAC in kills per set (3.12) and hitting percentage (.288).

Named second team All-Conference were junior setter Tanner Hoke, freshman Margaux Arntson, Kerkhof and Rigg. Hoke is second in the conference in assists (595) and is sixth in assists per set (6.13). Kerkhof is third on the team in kills (210) while Arntson is second (232).

The CMS volleyball team's next match is on Thursday, Nov. 6 at Cal Lutheran against La Verne at 5 p.m. in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament semifinals.
