Win over top-25 team highlights 3-1 trip to Texas for CMS

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – In its final tune-up tournament before SCIAC play begins on Sept. 19, the No. 18 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps volleyball team went 3-1 at the Trinity Fall Classic Sept. 12-13, including a win over No. 23 Mary Hardin-Baylor. CMS earned wins over Texas Lutheran (3-2), Mary Hardin-Baylor (3-1) and Southwestern (3-1) and dropped its match to No. 19 Trinity (3-0). The Athenas are now 9-3 on the season heading into its first SCIAC match of the season, Friday, Sept. 19 at home vs. Caltech at 7:30 p.m.

CMS 3, Texas Lutheran 2 (Sept. 12)
CMS defeated Texas Lutheran 25-14, 16-25, 25-21, 21-25, 15-10 in the first match of the tournament. The two teams went the duration, trading off set wins. In the fifth and final set, CMS jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a kill by junior Audrey Breitwieser and an attack error by Texas Lutheran. Texas Lutheran then went on a 5-0 run, capitalizing on four CMS attack errors to take a 5-2 lead. CMS jumped back ahead on a kill by freshman Shelbi Stein at 8-7. CMS outscored Texas Lutheran 7-3 over the final portion of the fifth set to capture a 15-10 win in the game and 3-2 victory overall. Stein had a double-double for CMS with 14 kills and 17 digs.

Trinity 3, CMS 0 (Sept. 12)
In the second match of the day, Trinity proved to be too much for CMS, winning in three sets, 25-16, 25-20, 25-20. In the first two games, Trinity got out to early advantages and led for the entirety to go ahead 2-0 in the match. In the third set, CMS initially trailed but took its first lead of the set at 12-11 on a service ace by Stein. CMS maintained its lead at 15-14 on a kill by freshman Mariah Rigg. Trinity then took control of the third set with 5-0 run to jump ahead 19-15 en route to the game and match win. Junior setter Tanner Hoke and freshman setter Clara Madsen were in double-figures in assists with 22 and 16, respectively.

CMS 3, Mary Hardin-Baylor 1 (Sept. 13)
Against Mary Hardin-Baylor, CMS played from behind for the majority of the match, but still managed to pull out the 3-1 win, 25-21, 21-25, 25-20, 25-21. In the match-deciding fourth set, CMS didn't take the lead for good until a kill by Rigg gave CMS a 20-19 lead. Sophomore outside hitter Nicole Kerkhof and Breitwieser pushed the CMS lead to 22-19. The match's deciding point came on a service error by Mary Hardin-Baylor.

CMS 3, Southwestern 1 (Sept. 13)
CMS' successful weekend came to a close with a come-from-behind win over Southwestern, 19-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-19. After dropping the first set, CMS came back to win three-straight games for the win. The third and fourth sets were the closest throughout each set. In the third set, the teams were tied at 23-23. Back-to-back attack errors by Southwestern gave CMS the win in the third game. The fourth set saw CMS lead by as many as five points on several occasions, but Southwestern got within a point at 20-19. Behind three errors (two attack and one ball handling), CMS scored the final five points to win the game and the match. Freshman Margaux Arntson had a team-high 14 kills while sophomore Quinn Morrison had two solo blocks and five block assists.
