Newcomers play key role as CMS goes 2-2 at Cal Lu Invite

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – In the second of three non-conference tournaments before SCIAC play begins on Sept. 19, the No.18 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps volleyball team went 2-2 at the Cal-Lu-Fornia Invitational on Sept. 5-6. CMS is now 6-2 on the season with a trip to San Antonio, Texas to play in four matches at Trinity University's Fall Classic Sept. 12-13 up next. In the Cal-Lu-Fornia Invitational, CMS earned wins over Augustana and George Fox and dropped matches to a par of top-15 teams in No. 11 Pacific Lutheran and No. 4 Emory.

Pacific Lutheran 3, CMS 1 (Sept. 5)
PLU took the match 3-1, winning 25-23, 17-25, 25-15, 25-21. CMS had an opportunity to take the first set of the match, leading 23-22 after an attack error by PLU. However, PLU answered with the final three points to take the first set 25-23. After dropping the first game, CMS answered back with a decisive win in the second set. The teams traded points for the first part of the second set. It wasn't until a kill by freshman outside hitter Crystal Anderson gave CMS a 12-9 lead that CMS held more than a two point lead in the early portion of the second set. A kill by freshman outside hitter Shelby Stein gave CMS a 21-13 lead, their largest lead of the second set.

In both the third and fourth sets, PLU jumped out to big early leads that ended up being more than CMS could overcome as PLU came away with three four-set victory.

CMS had four players with 11 or more digs led by senior libero Megan Coleman who had a team-high 18.

CMS 3, Augustana 0 (Sept. 5)
Later in the day, CMS bounced back from its first loss of the season with a three-set win (25-23, 25-11, 25-21) over Augustana (Ill.) of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. Stein and freshman Margaux Arntson led the way for CMS with nine kills each. Coleman tied for the match-high with 17 digs.

CMS 3, George Fox 1 (Sept. 6)
On the second day of the Cal-Lu-Fornia Invitational, the Athenas defeated the Bruins winning three of the four sets by a large margin (25-14, 20-25, 25-16, 25-9).  In the match, CMS limited George Fox to .145 attack percentage. Freshman middle blocker Mariah Rigg and junior Audrey Breitwieser each had a team-high 10 kills while Coleman and Stein and were in double-figures in digs with 24 and 11, respectively. Rigg had four block assists for CMS.

Emory 3, CMS 0 (Sept. 6)
Against fourth-ranked Emory, CMS made things interesting. Despite losing in three sets (25-22, 27-25, 25-22), CMS stayed close, losing each game by three points or less.  Stein led the way for the Athenas with 10 kills and Coleman had 18 digs but CMS managed just a .182 kill percentage and had 31 errors (23 attack errors and eight service errors). Junior setter Tanner Hoke had 24 assists for CMS.
