Simon, Bloss, Zimmer Take Individual Opening-Day Wins for CMS Women's Track and Field

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Brooke Simon won the pole vault and Meredith Bloss and Laura Zimmer added wins on the track to highlight the opening day of the 2022 season for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's track and field team, at its host OIDFE Challenge on Saturday at the Burns Track Complex.

Simon cleared 3.5 meters in the pole vault (11'5 3/4") to win by a half-foot over Emiliza Fernandez of Whittier. 

Meredith Bloss just edged out Natalie Bitetti in the one-mile run by four-hundredths of a second, as Bloss ended in 5:05.58 and Bitetti earned a time of 5:05.62. Laura Zimmer led a 1-10 CMS finish in the 800 meters with a time of 2:20.69, edging Bitetti who crossed in 2:21.68 for her second runner-up finish. 

Caroline DelVecchio was second in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.38 seconds. Claudia Nanez came in third place in the 200 with a time of 26.84. Anika Kimme was the top finisher for CMS in the 3000, coming across the line in 10:38.96 to finish third. while Kendra Teraoka was fourth in the 400 with a time of 1:10.43. 

Simone Rogers was second in the high jump at 1.50 meters. Carly Kirsch led the CMS throwers in the shot put with a distance of 10.24 meters to come in third, while Emily Burger was fourth. 

CMS took the 4x400 relay with ease, as Michael Lipsky, Lucy Konsmo, Caroline DelVecchio and Claudia Nanez finished in 4:07.61. 

The Athenas will be back in action in two weeks when they travel to the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational on Sept. 12.
