Athenas Earn First Place in Nine Events at SCIAC No. 1

WHITTIER, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's track and field team finished in first place in nine different events in its first SCIAC event of the spring season, a five-team multi-dual hosted by Whittier that also included Caltech, Chapman and Occidental.

Senior Sabrine Griffith was a part of three of those first-place finishes, two as an individual (long jump, 100-meter hurdles) as well as the first leg of the 4x100 relay. Junior Grace Pratt, senior Amanda Mell and junior Carolyn Weisman were also part of the winning relay team that finished in 48.44 seconds. 

In the 100-meter hurdles, Griffith was first in 14.78 seconds, followed by her own teammate, junior Aubrey Egerter, who was second in 15.25 seconds to improve on her PR and move into eighth in CMS history. In the long jump, Griffith led a 1-2-3-4 finish of Athenas with a top distance of 17'9.5" to just edge out Pratt by one-half inch. Just two inches behind Griffith was Mell, while Egerter (17'0.75") came in fourth. 

CMS also boasted a 1-2-3 finish in the pole vault as first-year Brooke Simon had the top clearance of the day at 12'1.5", which ranks her second in CMS history behind All-American Jacque Desmond. while sophomore Robin Peterson was second and junior Ariel Sepulveda was third. Junior Bailey Mknelly won the high jump, clearing five feet with a top effort of 5'0.25" while Egerter was second and first-year Ava Fascetti was fourth. Mell was first in the triple jump at 37'2.25" as well, followed by junior Carolyn Weisman in second. 

CMS also performed well in the distance events, as senior Alexandra Lambros took first place in the 5000 meters at 19:16.24, with first-years Mallorie Jenne and Hannah Stuart in fourth and fifth. Senior Georgia Scherer won the steeplechase, with sophomore Sophie Gitlin in second and sophomore Anne Elliott in fourth. 

The sprints didn't see a first-place finish from the Athenas, but first-year Mikaela Lipsky was second in the 400 meters (1:00.82), with junior Julia Drooff in third (1:01.68). Junior Nirel JonesMitchell was third in the 100 at 12.66 seconds, followed by Pratt in fourth. In the middle distances, first-year Megan Maley was third in the 800 (2:24.72) and sophomore Riley Harmon was fourth in the 1500 (4:45.40)

Senior Amanda Gallop earned a first-place finish in the discus with a top throw of 116 feet, 11 inches, and was also second in the shot put (35'2.5"), while Marika Morelan was second in the hammer at 119 feet, 10 inches. Peterson took third in the javelin at 86 feet, two inches.
