CMS Women's Track and Field Starts Outdoor Season Strong at All-Comers Meet

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's track and field team had numerous top 10 finishes in its first outdoor event of the spring, boasting a strong overall performance at the Pomona-Pitzer Collegiate All-Comers Meet on Saturday afternoon at Strehle Track. 

First-year Caroline DelVecchio continued her strong rookie season by coming in third place in the 100-meter hurdles in 14.90 seconds, followed by senior Sabrine Griffith in fourth place in 15.05. Griffith added a third-place finish in the long jump with a top distance of 18'7.25" with senior Amanda Mell in fifth in 17'5.5". Junior Carolyn Weisman was fourth in the triple jump with a top distance of 36'10.5" with first-year Olivia Renfro coming in tenth. 

First-year Brooke Simon was fourth in the pole vault with a top clearance of 11'5.75" to continue her strong start to the season, while junior Bailey Mknelly (4'11.75") was fifth in the high jump. In the throws, first-year Sophie Grossman earned a top-10 finish in the shot put in ninth place at 31'7.25" and also added a 16th place finish in the discus.   

Senior Georgia Scherer had a strong effort in the mile, finishing in 5:26.60 to come in third place out of 33 runners. Senior Laura Fleming was also in the top 10 in sixth place, while junior Delaney Hartmann was 11th. The 3000 meters saw sophomore Riley Harmon come in fifth place in 10:22.75, followed by sophomore Emily Clarke in sixth and sophomore Brooklyn Button in eighth. 

In the sprints, the Athenas had two top-10 finishers in the 400 meters, with first-year Mikaela Lipsky coming in seventh in 1:00.86, followed by junior Julia Drooff in 10th place in 1:01.97. CMS also had three top-25 performers (out of 54) in the 100-yard dash, as junior Grace Pratt was 21st in 12.89, senior Nirel JonesMitchell was 24th in 12.97 and first-year Angie Gagnon was 25th in 13.02. 

The middle distances saw first-year Megan Maley come in seventh in the 800 meters (2:24.75), while first-year Camille Forte was 11th (2:27.34) and senior Katie Snell was 13th (2:29.55). 

CMS will be back in action next weekend when it hosts the annual Rossi Relays, beginning at 10:30 a.m. at the Burns Track Complex.
