DelVecchio Earns Spot in 60-Meter Hurdles Finals to Highlight First Day of Jacksons/Nike Invitational

BOISE, Idaho - First-year Caroline DelVecchio qualified for the finals in the 60-meter hurdles by two-hundredths of a second, and five Athenas finished in the top 11 in the long jump to highlight the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's track and field team's performance on the first day of the Jacksons/Nike Boise Indoor Invitational on Friday afternoon.

DelVecchio finished second in her hear with 9.20 in the hurdles, and ended up finishing eighth out of 27 competitors to earn one of eight spots in tomorrow's finals. She was just ahead of the 9.22 pace that Kinnah Rhodes of Eastern Oregon ran in the first heat, which proved to be the difference in making it through to tomorrow.

Senior Sabrine Griffith was also just barely off the finals pace in the hurdles, coming in tenth place with a 9.26. She ended up as the fourth-place finisher overall, though, in the long jump, picking up five points towards the CMS total with a top distance of 17 feet, nine inches.

Griffith wasn't the only Athena to score in the long jump, though, as senior Amanda Mell came in fifth with a jump of 17'3.5" to earn four points, and junior Aubrey Egerter was seventh with a jump of 16'10.50" to earn two points. CMS also had two other juniors in the top 11, with Grace Pratt coming in ninth (16'7.75") and Carolyn Weisman (16'5") in 11th out of the 28 entrants in the field.

First-year Brooke Simon was also a top finisher in the field events, coming in eighth place in the pole vault at 11'1.75" out of 25 finishers.

On the men's side, first-years Christian Campbell and Nick Ong were ninth and 10th in the 60-meter dash, missing the finals by the tiniest of margins. Campbell's 7.05 seconds actually tied for eighth, but Jaron Carter of Northwest Christian edged him out in the thousandths of a second decimal to earn the eighth spot in the finals. Ong, meanwhile was only .03 behind with a 7.08 finish in 10th place. Campbell and Ong also both won their heats in the 200 meters, finishing 15th and 36th, respectively.

The second day of the Jacksons/Nike Boise Indoor Invitational will take place tomorrow, with the first events getting underway at 10:45 a.m.
