CMS Women's Track and Field Earns All-Academic Team Honors with 3.55 GPA

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's track and field team earned All-Academic status from the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association with a 3.55 team grade point average, while eight members of the Athenas captured All-Academic honors, the organization announced today.

Individual USTFCCCA All-Academic honors require at least a 3.3 cumulate grade point average, and either competing in the NCAA Championships or ranking in the top 50 nationally in an individual event (or top 35 for a relay). The eight Athenas who captured that honor for 2018-19 were seniors Jacque Desmond and Malea Martin, juniors Sabrine Griffith and Amanda Mell, sophomores Abigale Johnson, Grace Pratt and Carolyn Weisman, and first-year Riley Harmon.

The 3.55 team GPA easily enabled CMS to earn All-Academic Team status, putting the Athenas well above the minimum cutoff a 3.0.

On the track, CMS earned its fifth straight SCIAC Championship, winning a tight battle by just three points over preseason favorite Redlands (150-147) at the Burns Track Complex. Desmond set a SCIAC record in the pole vault and went on to earn All-America status by finishing fourth at the NCAA Division III Championships. Johnson also captured a SCIAC title in the 1500, while Griffith and Mell earned their way to the NCAA Championships in the long jump and triple jump, respectively.
