CMS Women's Track and Field Earns Nine USTFCCCA All-West Region Honors

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Seven different members of the CMS women's track and field team combined to win nine All-West Region honors from the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, the organization announced this week.

Three of the honorees earned NCAA Division III Championship qualifications and will be in action this week in Geneva, Ohio at nationals. They include senior Jacque Desmond (pole vault), junior Sabrine Griffith (long jump) and junior Amanda Mell (triple jump). 

Griffith was also one of two Athenas to win All-West Region in two different events, which are given to the top five individuals in each event within each region. In addition to her All-West honors in the long jump, she also finished the year in the top five in the West Region in the 100-meter hurdles. 

Sophomore Abigale Johnson was also a double honoree on the USTFCCCA All-West Region team, capturing the award in both the 1500 and the 5000. Sophomore Carolyn Weisman joined Mell among the top five in the West in the triple jump. 

Senior Malea Martin earned All-West in the 10000 meters after running the event only one time all year, which came in the SCIAC Championships when she finished second, one day before adding a third-place finish in the 5000. Freshman Riley Harmon also made her way on the USTFCCCA All-Region list with her performance at the SCIAC Championships in the steeplechase, where she finished third. 

Desmond and Griffith will compete at the NCAA Championships on Thursday, with Desmond in the pole vault finals at noon, and Griffith competing in long jump prelims at 5 p.m. If Griffith makes the finals of the long jump, that round will also be held on Thursday after the conclusion of the prelims, while Mell will be in the triple jump on Saturday.
