Amanda Mell Records 12-Meter Triple Jump at Redlands, Placing Fourth in DIII This Season

REDLANDS, Calif. - Junior Amanda Mell had a triple jump of exactly 12 meters (39'4.5") to break her personal best by almost a half-meter and improve from 33rd place all the way to a tie for fourth in NCAA Division III this season, highlighting the performance of the CMS women's track and field team at the Redlands Final Qualifier on Thursday. 

Mell's previous best of 11.57 meters was set last month at the SCIAC Championships, but she was able to obliterate it on Thursday and move up into the top five in the national standings this year. Eka Jose of WashU has the best triple jump in the country this year at 12.19 meters (exactly 40 feet), while Nisa Raqib of Buffalo State (12.10m), Heidi Nassos of WashU (12.05m) and Betsy Schreier of Wisconsin-La Crosse (12.00m) are the only other triple jumpers to reach the 12-meter mark this year. 

Mell wasn't the only Athena to hit her personal best in the triple jump, as Carolyn Weisman recorded a jump of 11.48 meters to move up from 10th place in CMS history to seventh, while moving into the top 50 in the country at No. 41 (pending results of other meets around the country).

Sophomore Grace Pratt, meanwhile, set a new personal best in the 100 meters (12.29) and tied her personal best in the long jump (5.55 meters). Pratt eclipsed her previous personal best of 12.36 in the 100, set last month at the SCIAC Championships, as she moves up into a tie for fifth in CMS history in the event with Diana Thomas, who ran a 12.29 in 1986. Pratt's time also ties her for 39th in NCAA Division III this year. Pratt's long jump of 5.55 meters (18'2.5") is also tied for ninth in Athena annals in that event, putting her in the top 10 in two different individual events at the midway point of her collegiate career. 

Junior Sabrine Griffith also tied her personal best in the long jump at 5.75 meters (18'10.5"), which matches her top performance from earlier this season as the third-best distance in Athena history and the No. 12 mark in NCAA Division III this season. Griffith also clocked a 14.71 in the 100-meter hurdles, just .03 behind her top time of the season set at the SCIAC Championships, which ranks her No. 29 nationally.  

CMS will next await invitations to the NCAA Division III Championships next week in Geneva, Ohio, which will be extended once the final results from all of the last chance qualifiers from around the country are tabulated.
