Jacque Desmond Wins Another Pole Vault at Occidental Invitational

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's track and field team competed at three different events this weekend as it winds down the 2018-19 regular season, with senior Jacque Desmond earning another first-place finish in the pole vault at the Occidental Invitational.

The Athenas already captured the 2019 SCIAC Championship on April 27-28, and have one more week remaining to try to earn qualifying marks for the NCAA Division III Championships in Geneva, Ohio from May 23-25. 

The weekend started at home with the Claremont Classic Multis on Thursday and Friday as Deyana Marsh and Aubrey Egerter competed in the heptathlon. Marsh earned 3289 points and Egerter had 2575 with both getting their highest totals out of the 100 hurdles, where Egerter had 796 points with a 15.35 and Marsh had 749 points by finishing in 15.72. Both also exceded 700 points in the 200, with Marsh finishing in 27.11 and Egerter in 27.12, earning 703 and 702, respectively. 

Junior Sabrine Griffith competed in the 100 meter hurdles at the Azusa Pacific Twilight Meet on Friday and ran a 14.74 to place eighth. Junior Amanda Mell and sophomore Carolyn Weisman were in the triple jump as well, with Mell earning a top distance of 11.15 meters, and Weisman right behind with an 11.10. 

On Saturday at the Occidental Invitational, Desmond competed in the pole vault for the first time since setting a SCIAC record at the league championships with a vault of 13'0.5" to win the title. On Satuday, she had a top clearance of 12'5.5" to tie for first at the event out of 17 competitors, and she still remains tied for second in the Division III national rankings with her vault at SCIACs. 

Griffith and Mell were back in action for the second straight day at Occidental, competing in the long jump along with sophomore Grace Pratt. Griffith placed 17th with a 17'10.25" and Mell came in 20th at 17'3.25" and Pratt jumped 16'10.75" to come in 23rd. Sophomore Abigale Johnson, the SCIAC Champion in the 1500 meters, competed again and ran a 4:40.25, just shy of her season-best time. 

CMS will be back in action next weekend at the Redlands Last Chance Qualifier as several Athenas try to earn their way to Ohio.
