CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's track and field team will host the 2019 SCIAC Championships this Saturday and Sunday at the Burns Track Complex, hoping to win its fourth straight league title at its home facility.

The Athenas were 7-1 in dual competition against SCIAC teams in the spring, with the only defeat coming to No. 3 Redlands, which will present a formidable challenge to the CMS effort to four-peat. Occidental was third and Pomona-Pitzer fourth in the regular season dual standings.

The distance events are where the Athenas will look to pick up substantial points in their quest to win the title. Sophomore Abigale Johnson is the top seed in the 1500 meters (4:39.64) and is second in the 5000 (17:30.06). CMS actually has four of the top six times in the 5000 with senior Natalie Marsh (17:39.69) and Malea Martin (17:40.95) in the No. 4 and No. 5 positions, with freshman Riley Harmon (17:41.10) at No. 6.

Harmon (11:22.32) and freshman Sophie Gitlin (11:23.46) are No. 2 and No. 3 in the steeplechase, with Msall (11:42.53) No. 6 and freshman Anne Elliot (12:19.66) at No. 10, giving the Athenas four of the top 10 times in the league. Senior Matilda Msall (4:52.13) and Marsh (4:52.97) will also challenge for the finals in the 1500, coming in with the eighth and ninth best times, respectively, while senior McKenzie Deutsch is a threat for the finals in the 800, where she places seventh through the regular season.

In the sprints, sophomore Grace Pratt will look to make the finals in the 100 and 200, coming into the weekend ranked seventh in the 200 with a 25.77 and 11th in the 100 with a 12.75, both of which she ran at the final SCIAC Multi-Dual. Sophomore Julia Droof, meanwhile, will challenge for the finals in the 400 after running the eighth-best time in the league during the regular season (1:01.22 at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational).

The 100-meter hurdles see the Athenas with three of the top 10 marks coming into SCIACs, with junior Sabrine Griffith leading the way in the No. 4 spot with a 14.84 at the final SCIAC Multi-Dual. Sophomore Aubrey Egerter is eighth with a 15:37 and sophomore Deyana Marsh is ninth with a 15.42, putting both in position to reach Sunday's finals. Sophomore Bailey Mknelly is ninth in the 400-meter hurdles (1:08.24), putting her in contention for the finals in that event as well.

Senior Jacque Desmond is the top seed in the pole vault after breaking her own school record with a 12'7.5" vault at the final SCIAC Multi-Dual. The Athenas also have the No. 3 (senior Dani Chami) and No. 6 (freshman Robin Peterson) top marks in the pole vault to give them a chance to pick up valuable points in the team competition.

Griffith is the top seed in the long jump after an 18'9.75" at the San Diego State Aztec Open, while junior Amanda Mell ranks fourth (18'3.25") and Pratt ranks seventh (18'1.75"), all placing in the top 10 in CMS history. Mell, meanwhile, has the second-best SCIAC mark in the triple jump (37'11.25") and sophomore Carolyn Weisman is fifth (26'9"), while Mknelly places 10th in the high jump (4'11.5").

In the throws, senior Mikaela Gallardo comes in ranked fourth in the hammer throw with a top distance of 141 feet at the third SCIAC Multi-Dual. Junior Amanda Gallop is fifth in the shot put (37'8.75") at the Redlands Invitational and eighth in the discus (108'9") where freshman Rosey Sams (107'8") holds down the No. 10 spot.

The CMS 4x100 relay team will also look to challenge for the league title, coming in ranked second behind Redlands, with Griffith, Egerter, Mell and Pratt running a 48.46 in the third SCIAC Multi-Dual.
