CMS Women's Track and Field Has Final Tune-Ups Before Hosting SCIAC Championships

CLAREMONT, Calif. - With one week to go before hosting the SCIAC Championships at the Burns Track Complex, several members of the CMS Women's Track and Field team were in action at the Bryan Clay Invitational and the Beach Invitational this weekend looking to tune up against some of the nation's top competition.

At the Bryan Clay Invitational, hosted by Azusa Pacific and featuring thousands of athletes, many of whom came from top Division I schools, sophomore Abigale Johnson finished seventh in her heat (out of 36) in the 5000 with a 17:30.06, putting her just over four seconds outside of joining the CMS top ten.

Senior Natalie Marsh ran a 17:41.01 in the same heat of the 5000 to finish 16th, while freshman Riley Harmon had an 11:25.08 in the steeplechase, just two seconds behind her top time set last week at the third SCIAC Multi-Dual.

At the Beach Invitational on Saturday, another event filled with Division I athletes, junior Sabrine Griffith ran a 14.98 in the 100 hurdles and had a long jump of 17'9" to place 34th. Junior Amanda Mell was 48th in the long jump at 16'10" and sophomore Carolyn Weisman was 37th in the triple jump at 36'9". Senior Jacque Desmond, who broke her own school record in the pole vault last week at 12'7.5" had another strong outing, clearing 12'4" to come in 42nd out of 82.

CMS will be back in action when it returns home next week to host the 2019 SCIAC Championships at the Burns Track Complex on Saturday and Sunday. The Athenas will be trying for their fourth straight league championship on their home track.
