CMS Women's Track and Field Earns Pair of Dual Wins over Whittier, Caltech

PASADENA, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's track and field team competed in a four-team multi-dual at Caltech and came away with a pair of wins, defeating Whittier 107-56 and Caltech 138-21 on Saturday.

With the wins, CMS is now 3-1 in duals against SCIAC competition, with a win over La Verne and a loss to Redlands at its first Multi-Dual on March 2. 

Junior Sabrine Griffith, the reigning SCIAC Field Athlete of the Week for her performance in the long jump last week at San Diego State, got the event started on a high note by coming in first place in the 100-meter hurdles, winning in 15.04 seconds. Freshman Sophie Gitlin followed with a first-place finish in the steeplechase, her first collegiate track victory, with a time of 11:27.71, which puts her in ninth place in program history. 

The Athenas then continued to show their dominance in the distance events, coming in 1-2-3 in the 1500 meters with the only three runners to come in under the five-minute mark. Sophomore Abigale Johnson was first with a time of 4:51.14, followed by senior Natalie Marsh (4:53.27) and freshman Riley Harmon (4:55.09). 

The dominance was even more evident in the 5000, where CMS had the top six finishers, led by senior Malea Martin with a time of 18:31.53. She was followed by sophomore Dulcie Jones (18:50.16) and senior Morgan Blevins (18:52.03) in second and third, with freshman Emily Clarke, junior Alexandra Lambros and sophomore Samantha Baker finishing 4-6. 

Sophomore Grace Pratt nearly added a sprinting win for the Athenas but she ended up with a "close as you can get" second in the 200, finishing in 26.13, one-hundredth of a second behind Tiazha Hogue of Whittier. 

Senior Jacque Desmond added another first-place finish in the pole vault with a top height of 11 feet, 11.75 inches, while junior Amanda Mell captured the triple jump at 37 feet, 1.25 inches. Griffith and Pratt, meanwhile, were second and third in the long jump at 17'8", and 17'7", respectively. 

In the throws, senior Mikaela Gallardo came through with a first-place finish in the javelin with a throw of 114 feet, winning by 12 feet over Morgan Snyder of Cal Lutheran. She also came in third in the hammer and fourth in the shot put, while freshman Rosey Sams was third in the discus.  

CMS will be back in action next weekend when it participates in the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational on Saturday.
