Bassett Rewrites the Record Books in Hammer Throw
CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's track and field team competed all over Southern California this weekend with athletes at the Mt. SAC Relays, Azusa Pacific's Bryan Clay Invitational, and at the Long Beach State Invitational.
An Impressive showing from Bryn McKillop (SC) got the weekend off to a solid start for the Athenas. McKillop moved up to second all-time in the CMS record books with a time if 16:45.75 in the 5000 meter run.
Emily Bassett (CMC) etched her name in CMS, SCIAC, and NCAA Division III history on Friday at the Long Beach State Invitational. The senior not only shattered both the CMS and SCIAC record, but recorded the third farthest hammer throw in NCAA Division III history with a mark of 62.04m.
Day One: Thursday, April 19
Thursday was highlighted by McKillop's performance in the 5000 meter run in Azusa, where she took fourth in her heat behind runners from Division I and II institutions. Her time of 16:45.75 moves her to second-place in the CMS record books in the event and is the fourth fastest in Division III this season. She broke her previous personal record of 16:56.33 by over 10 seconds
Emily Bassett (CMC) dominated in a talented field in the hammer throw at the Mt. SAC Relays, one of the top meets in the country. The senior finished second behind an athlete from the University of Minnesota, and ahead of numerous Division I competitors with a mark of 58.87m.
Also in action in Azusa, Ellen Berkley (CMC) was the top Division III finisher in the 3000 meter steeplechase and clocked a time of 11:06.42.
Day Two: Friday, April 20
As mentioned, Bassett dazzled at the Long Beach State Invitational, shattering the CMS and SCIAC record in the hammer throw as well as throwing the third farthest in NCAA Division III history. She accomplished this monumental feat with a mark of 62.04m, besting her previous record of 58.94m. In her attempts, Bassett had three throws over 59m and two that broke the SCIAC record. She placed ninth among a strong field of Division I competitors.
Sabrine Griffith (CMC) got the day started at the Bryan Clay Invite, turning in her best time of the season in the 100 meter hurdles at 14.91 as the top Division III finisher.
In the 100 meter dash, Tyra Abraham (SC) turned in the top Division III time at the meet with a time of 11.77. She finished just a tenth of a second behind the seventh-place finisher from New Mexico State to earn eighth. Nirel JonesMitchell (CMC) also had a strong showing in the event, finishing with a time of 12.43.
In the field, Amanda Mell (CMC) produced one of her best performances of the season in the triple jump, leaping to a mark of 10.99m.
The Athenas next compete at the SCIAC Conference Championships hosted at the University of Redlands. The meet is set for Apr. 27 and 28.
