4x100 Meter Relay Makes History at Pomona-Pitzer Invite

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's track and field continued their successful season on Saturday when they crossed the street to compete at the 2018 Pomona-Pitzer Invitational.

New CMS records were set in the 4x100 meter relay and the hammer throw. In the 4x100 meter relay, Sabrine Griffith (CMC), Danielle Honan (CMC), Nirel JonesMitchell (CMC), and Tyra Abraham (SC) shattered the school record by almost half a second. Their time of 46.82 set not only a new CMS record, but a new SCIAC record as well. It is the top time in Division III this season.

Emily Bassett (CMC) broke her own record in the the hammer throw for the second consecutive week. Her throw of 58.94m is the second best in Division III this season.

On the Track:

As mentioned, the 4x100 team made CMS history, breaking the previous school record of 47.30 set in 2002 with a time of 46.82. Not only did the four ladies break the CMS record, they also set a new SCIAC conference record and turned in the top time in Division III this season.

Abraham also sprinted her way to two outstanding solo finishes. The senior was the top collegiate finisher in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.81. She finished in second, less than a tenth of a second behind the top runner and over three tenths of a second ahead of the third-place runner from Fresno Pacific. She then went on to run the third-fastest time in Division III this season the 200 meter dash at 24.58, less than one one hundredth of a second behind the fifth-place runner from Division I Cornell. She ended that event in sixth as the top Division III finisher.

Becca Stewart (SC) set a new personal record in the 400 meter dash, taking 11th in the field of 55 as the top Division III finisher. Her time of 59.08 is the fastest in the SCIAC this season.

Lauren Stanislaw (SC) ran her way to a seventh-place finish in the 5000 meter run, crossing the finish line in 17:56.32. Bryn McKillop (SC) was also in action in distance events and was the top DIvision III finisher in the 1500 meter run. Her time of 4:30.08 earned her an eighth-place finish overall.

In the Field:

As mentioned, Bassett broke her own record for the second-straight week in the hammer throw to win the event. After turning in a CMS-best of 58.90m last week in Whittier, Bassett one-upped herself with a throw of 58.94m to set a new CMS record, the second farthest in Division III this season.

Amelia Otto Cutting (HMC) jumped to a fifth-place finish in the high jump with a mark of 1.60m. Her mark puts her in the top-20 of Division III this season. Griffith posted a seventh-place finish in the long jump with a mark of 5.46m.

In the triple jump, Amanda Mell (CMC) put up the seventh-best mark in Division III, taking third in the event at 11.50m. She was the top DIII finisher at the meet and is now fifth all-time in the CMS record books. Carolyn Weisman (CMC) was also in action in the triple jump where she placed 10th with a jump of 11.13m.

The Athenas are back in action next Saturday, Apr. 14 in their third SCIAC Multi Dual of the year. The meet will be hosted by CMS.
