Bassett Sets CMS Record, Athenas Impress in Whittier

WHITTIER, Calif. – The No. 5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's track and field team had another impressive showing this weekend at the SCIAC Multi Dual meet hosted by Whittier College. The Athenas cruised to two victories, outscoring Cal Lutheran 116.5-45.5 and Whittier 99.0-62.0.

Emily Bassett (CMC) set a new CMS record in the hammer throw with a mark of 58.90m and Nirel JonesMitchell (CMC) climbed the list in both the 100 meter dash and 200 meter dash.

On the Track

As mentioned, JonesMitchell put herself in the CMS record books with two of her runs today. The sophomore won the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.39, the seventh fastest in program history. She then went on to finish second in the 200 meter dash, behind teammate Tyra Abraham (SC), with the eighth fastest time at 25.41.

Abraham won the 200 meter dash, clocking a time of 24.72. Grace Pratt (CMC) took third in the event with a time of 26.61.

In the 400 meter dash, Bryn McKillop (SC) placed second (1:00.79) and Katie Snell (CMC) finished four seconds later to grab fourth in the event.

Kyleigh Mann (CMC) and Abigale Johnson (SC) finished second and third, respectively, in the 800 meter run with times of 2:19.65 and 2:20.70. Roselyn Cantu (CMC) rounded out the top-five with 2:24.43 mark.

In the distance events, Lauren Stanislaw grabbed a third-place finish in the 1500 meter run, crossing the finish line at 4:52.31. Natalie March (SC) finished fifth with a mark of 5:00.10. Ellen Berkley finished in the top-three in the 5000 meter run, clocking a time of 18:08.44.

Hurdler Sabrine Griffith (CMC) earned a second-place finish in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 15.12. Deyana Marsh (HMC) and Aubrey Egerter (HMC) rounded out the top-five, finishing in fourth and fifth, respectively. Becca Stewart (SC) finished third in the 400 meter hurdles.

Georgia Scherer (CMC) won the 3000 meter steeplechase for CMS, beating the second-place finisher by a minute with a time of 11:57.60.

The CMS 4x100 meter relay team shined, finishing first by over a second. The team of Griffith, Danielle Honan (CMC), JonesMitchell, and Abraham crossed the finish line with a time of 48.05.

In the Field

Amelia Otto Cutting (HMC) jumped to the third-place finish in the high jump with a mark of 1.55m. CMS dominated in the pole vault, grabbing the top two spots. Dani Chami (CMC) earned a first-place finish with a mark of 3.05m, and finishing just behind her was teammate Zoe Cardwell-Copen (SC) with a mark of 2.90m. Ariel Sepulveda (CMC) finished in a tie for third.

Along with hurdles and relays, Griffith also took part in the long jump where she finished third with a leap of 5.20m. Amanda Mell finished fifth at 5.07m. Mell also saw action in the triple jump, winning the event with a mark of 11.22m.

Bassett did what she has done all season, dominate in throwing events. The senior won the shot put (11.37m), discus (37.41m), and the hammer throw (58.90m). As mentioned, her performance in the hammer throw is now the highest mark in CMS women's track and field history and is the second highest in Division III this year. She broke her own record of 58.53m set last season.

Mikaela Gallardo (SC) also had a strong showing in the throwing events, taking sixth in the discus with a toss of 26.43m, and third in the hammer at 41.06m.

Amanda Gallop (SC) rounded out the field events with a second-place finish in the javelin, tossing her implement a distance of 32.26m.

The Athenas are back in action next Saturday, Apr. 7 at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational.
