Abraham and Bassett High Point Athenas' Season Opener

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's track and field team opened the 2018 season at the Westmont On Your Marks Meet on Saturday. The Athenas' effort was highlighted by a pair of victories from 2017 All-Americans. Emily Bassett (CMC) claimed the weight throw with a toss of 15.66 meters and Tyra Abraham (SC) won the 200 meter dash with a time of 25.52.

On the Track
As mentioned Abraham claimed the 200 meter in convincing fashion. Her time of 25.52 was .74 of a second ahead of the second-place finisher. Her time in the event is tied for the 10th fastest time in the event this season in Division III. In addition to her victory in the 200 meter, Abraham took second-place in the 60 meter with a time of 7.81. Despite coming in second in the meet, Abraham's time is the ninth fastest in the country this season (Division III).

In both the 200 meter and 60 meter, Abraham was joined by teammates in the top five. In the 200 meter, Grace Pratt (CMC) finished in fifth with a time of 27.04. Then in the 60 meter, Danielle Honan (CMC) finished with a time of 8.06 to take fifth-place in the race.

Pratt also competed in the 400 meter dash and took third-place with a run of 1:03.38 in the event.

Rounding out the top-five finishers for the Athenas on the track were a pair of runners in the 60 meter dash. Sabrine Griffith (CMC) and Aubrey Egerter (HMC) finished back-to-back in the event in third and fourth with times of 9.38 and 9.59, respectively.

In the Field
As noted, Emily Bassett highlighted the day in the field for the Athenas. The senior had a pair of strong showings in her two events. First she won the weight throw with by nearly two meters. He distance of 15.66 meters was 1.91 meter farther than the second-place finisher. Her toss equates to 51' 4.5" and currently ranks 24th in Division III in the event.

In the shot put, Bassett finished in second place with a distance of 11.43 meters. She finished just 7 centimeters behind the first-place finisher, Alaysha Green (11.50m) from Concordia Irvine.

The Athenas also picked up second-place finishes in the long jump, high jump, and triple jump from three different athletes. Sabrine Griffith took second in the long jump with an attempt of 5.06 meters.

Amel Otto Cutting (HMC) tied for second in the high jump with a height of 1.55 meters. She finished just .05 meters behind the first-place finisher.

In the triple jump, Carolyn Weisman (CMC) took second-place with an attempt of 10.83 meters. In addition to her finish in the triple jump, Weisman finished in fourth-place in the long jump with a mark of 4.90 meters.

The Athenas will be back in action two weeks from today when they travel to Houston for the Howie Ryan Invitational at the University of Houston on Feb. 9.
