LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Several personal records were set by the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps track and field team at the Occidental Distance Carnival and Spring Break Classic on Friday, including a few top three finishes. Only a couple throwers and the CMS distance runners participated at this meet, competing against athletes from several Division I and II schools as well as all of the SCIAC.
Senior Carmen Mejia (SC) had a dominating win in the 800-meter, taking first place with a time of 2:10.76. Despite falling short of her previous best record, it is the second best 800 mark in Division III in 2017. Junior Bryn McKillop (SC) stood out amongst all SCIAC athletes in the 5000-meter race, taking eighth among all collegiate athletes with a time of 17:20.10. This time put her eighth on the CMS all-time record list.
The female throwers also had an excellent showing as junior Emily Bassett (CMC) took second place in the hammer and was the best among collegians. She finished with the mark of 176-04, enough to take the No. 2 ranked mark in this Division III season. Senior Vaiva Palunas (SC) finished just behind her teammate at third place with a mark of 174-01, enough to be the No. 3 mark in Division III.
Freshman Thomas D'Anieri (CMC) had a strong performance in his 5000 debut, finishing 11th overall, seventh among collegians, and second among SCIAC athletes. The distance runner finished with a time of 14:40.63, enough to rank sixth on the all-time CMS record. His teammate, senior Jesse Joseph (HMC), recorded a PR in the same event, finishing at a time of 14:40.96, enough to be eighth in the CMS recordbook.
The Stags and Athenas will compete again next Friday, March 17 at the Redlands Invitational. This event will feature mainly the sprinters, hurdlers, jumpers, and throwers. A select group within the track team will compete on Saturday, March 18 at the Hornet Invitational at Sacramento State University.
