Athenas go 3-0, but Stags take loss to Sagehens at Multi-Dual
CLAREMONT, Calif. – The SCIAC Multi-Dual was an electric affair, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Track and Field team saw several individuals set personal bests at Strehle Track on Saturday afternoon. Five programs from the SCIAC participated in this event, the first of three multi-dual meets this season. The women's team performed spectacularly, rolling to large wins over Pomona-Pitzer, Chapman, and Whittier. The men's team managed to defeat Chapman and Whittier, but took an extremely close loss to the Sagehens from Pomona-Pitzer.
Sophomore Jacque Desmond (SC) had a standout performance for the Athenas on the pole vault, setting a new CMS record and becoming the sixth All-Time SCIAC performer with a jump of 11-11.75. Senior Vaiva Palunas (SC) won three throwing events, including the shot 43-01.50, discus 142-10, and hammer 172-04.
Senior Caroline Willian (CMC) made her debut on the track after spending the 2016 season studying abroad and won the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:11.35.
All Americans senior Carmen Mejia (SC) and junior Tyra Abraham (SC) each ran to two strong wins. Mejia delivered in the 400-meter (58.90) and 800-meter (2:14.94) while Abraham doubled the 100-meter (12.19) and 200-meter (25.30).
Senior Cam Van (CMC) put on an excellent display with a first place finish in the high jump 6-04.75 and triple jump 45-03. Sophomore Finn Southerland (HMC) reached his PR on the 400 hurdles at 1:00.90 as did freshman Sasha Novitsky (CMC) who recorded a 1:01.98.
On the throws, freshman Reese Peterson (HMC) also earned a win on the discus throw, recording a distance of 132-10, while freshman Tyson-Jay Saena (HMC) hit a PR on the shotput at 44-03.50 to take second place.
On the javelin, senior Josh Rooney (CMC) took second place after throwing for 154-03, a personal best. Freshman Maxwell Knowles (CMC) also recorded a personal best in the same event, throwing 148-03 to take third place.
The battle between the Stags and the Sagehens came down to the 4x400 relay race. Sophomore Matthew Guillory (HMC), freshmen Justin Estrada (CMC) and Cameron Finley (CMC), and senior Joshua Sealand (HMC) were neck-to-neck on the relay race, but the Sagehens won with a lean across the finish line. The Sagehens finished ahead of the Stags by 0.05 seconds to win the meet.
The Stags and Athenas compete again on Friday, March 10 at the Occidental Distance and Sprint Carnival in Occidental College.
