CMS Women's Tennis Advances to Regional Finals with Quick 5-0 Win over Oneonta

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team dropped only two games in three doubles matches, and only five games in singles, as it earned a quick 5-0 win over SUNY-Oneonta in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament on Friday at Case Western Reserve.

With the win, CMS improves to 23-3 on the year and advances through to the regional finals tomorrow, where it will face No. 12 Case Western after the regional hosts defeated Denison 5-1 in the other semifinal.

CMS had two perfect results, as Sydney Lee and Gabby Lee earned an 8-0 win at No. 2 doubles, and Audrey Yoon picked up a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles. Gabby Lee then nearly had her second perfect match of the day, earning the clincher at No. 5 singles with a 6-0, 6-1 win, closing out just before Sydney Lee (6-1, 5-0 at No. 2) and Devon Wolfe (6-0, 5-0 at No. 6) were ready to finish their matches.

Crystal Juan was also up 6-1, 3-0 at No. 1 singles, and Ella Brissett led 6-2, 3-0 at No. 4 at the time the match was halted. In doubles, Nikolina Batoshvili and Alisha Chulani earned an 8-1 win at No. 1, while Wolfe and Bahsoun picked up an 8-1 win at No. 3.

CMS stands one win away from making its 10th straight appearance at nationals, which will be held May 23-25 in Orlando, Florida. The Athenas made it to the quarterfinal round all nine years from 2011-19, including a national championship in 2018 and a runner-up finish in 2019, and then did not compete the last two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
