CMS Women's Tennis Earns Two Home Shutout Wins Over San Diego Christian, Whittier



CLAREMONT, Calif. – The third-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team picked up a pair of shutout wins on Friday at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center, taking a non-conference win over San Diego Christian in the morning and then earning a SCIAC win over Whittier in the afternoon.

Devon Wolfe went 4-0 on the day without losing a game, winning a pair of 6-0, 6-0 singles decisions to go with 6-0 and 8-0 doubles wins.

With the victories, the Athenas improve to 17-2 on the season, and stretch their winning streak to 12 matches in a row. CMS also remains undefeated outdoors on the year at 16-0, with the only two defeats coming at the ITA Indoor Nationals in February.

CMS took its first match of the day by a 7-0 score over San Diego Christian (playing by NAIA rules with doubles counting as one point). The Athenas almost made it through doubles without surrendering a game, as Sydney Lee and Gabby Lee won 6-0 at No. 2 and Wolfe and Sena Selby earned a 6-0 win at No. 3. Nikolina Batoshvili and Alisha Chulani settled for a 6-1 win at No. 1.

Wolfe continued on with her shutout performance with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles to give the Athenas their second point of the day. Arushi Malik won a 6-3, 6-0 decision at No. 6, and Sena Selby finished off the clinch with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 5.

CMS finished off the 7-0 win with three more singles victories in the top half of the ladder. Audrey Yoon won a 6-1, 6-1 decision at No. 2, Ella Brissett took a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 3, and Crystal Juan finished off the shutout with a 7-5, 6-1 victory at No. 1.

In the nightcap against Whittier, CMS took a 9-0 victory and did earn a clean sweep of doubles with three 8-0 wins. Brissett and Yoon were the first to finish at No. 2, followed by Wolfe and Malik taking an 8-0 win at No. 3. Batoshvili and Chulani then capped off the 3-0 lead with an 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles.

CMS had four 6-0, 6-0 wins in singles, with Sydney Lee (No. 1), Chulani (No. 4) and Selby (No. 6) joining Wolfe at No. 5 with shutout victories. Batoshvili (6-0, 6-2 at No. 2) and Gabby Lee (6-2, 6-1 at No. 3) also picked up singles wins.

The Athenas will be back in action tomorrow when they travel to Chapman for a 10 a.m. contest.
