CMS Women's Tennis Picks Up Eighth Straight Win, Knocks Off Williams 6-3

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The third-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team picked up its eighth win in a row, six of which have come against top-20 Division III teams, knocking off No. 16 Williams 6-3 on Saturday afternoon at the Biszantz Family tennis Center.

With the win, CMS now stands at 13-2, and 8-0 since returning from the ITA Indoor Nationals, with wins over Emory, Amherst, Sewanee, Bowdoin, Middlebury and Williams among top 20 teams. Williams slips to 2-4 with the loss.

CMS picked up a key point in doubles when Alisha Chulani and Nikolina Batoshvili captured a 7-4 tiebreaker win to tie the score 1-1. Gabby Lee and Sydney Lee then finished off an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles to give the Athenas a 2-1 lead.

Devon Wolfe rolled to a quick win at No. 6 singles, taking a 6-2, 6-0 win, and Batoshvili followed moments later with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 4. That set up a clinching win from Ella Brissett for the second straight night, as she earned a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 5 to put the Athenas ahead 5-1.

Sydney Lee added a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles for the sixth point for the Athenas, before Williams was able to close out with the final two points at No. 3 and No. 1 singles. Crystal Juan had an epic battle at No. 1 singles that pushed the length of the match over five hours, before falling 10-6 in the third set tiebreaker, after splitting 7-6 sets (falling 10-8 in the first set tiebreaker, and winning the second set tiebreaker 8-6).

CMS will return to action next weekend for a pair of SCIAC matches, traveling to Caltech on Friday and hosting Cal Lutheran on Saturday.
