CMS Women's Tennis Earns Fourth Spot in First National Poll

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team is ranked No. 4 in the nation in the first ITA Division III Women's Tennis Coaches poll, the organization announced on Thursday.

The University of Chicago holds down the top spot after capturing the championship of the ITA Indoor Nationals last weekend, edging Emory in the finals, which comes in ranked No. 2. Emory defeated CMS in a close battle in the semifinals (and visits Biszantz Family Tennis Center today at 4 p.m. for a rematch), while Chicago edged Pomona-Pitzer, which is currently ranked No. 3.

Wesleyan, Tufts, MIT, Sewanee, Amherst and Middlebury round out to the current top-10, several of which are slated to visit Biszantz as well in the coming weeks.

The last time CMS was included in a national poll was in 2020, when it stood at No. 1 in the nation with a 14-0 record after defeating Emory 5-4 in the ITA Indoor finals. The Athenas were also No. 2 in the final poll in 2019 after finishing national runner-up to Wesleyan, and No. 1 in 2018, when they defeated Emory for the first national championship in program history.

CMS will have three matches this weekend. After facing No. 2 Emory today at 4 p.m., the Athenas will host Division I Bowling Green on Saturday and then meet No. 34 Babson on Sunday. Next week will feature matches against No. 9 Amherst on Wednesday, and a doubleheader with No. 8 Sewanee and No. 16 Bowdoin on Thursday.

No. 10 Middlebury and No. 15 Williams visit March 25 and March 26, respectively, and a rematch with No. 3 Pomona-Pitzer looms on April 16.
