CMS Women's Tennis Dominates Singles to Earn Wins over Trinity and Mary Washington

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team followed a similar script in both of its home matches on Sunday, battling to a tough 2-1 lead after doubles with two of the three matches going to tiebreaker, and then rolling in singles on its way to 8-1 victories at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.

The wins improve the CMS record to 4-0 on the season, while Trinity falls to 6-4 and Mary Washington opens up its season 0-1. 

In the Trinity match, Sarah Bahsoun and Sena Selby provided the swing point in doubles, coming back from a 7-4 deficit to win the tiebreaker for an 8-7 victory. Crystal Juan and Ella Brissett had an easier win at No. 3 doubles (8-2), but Trinity earned its one point of the match in a tiebreaker at No. 2. 

CMS, though, left little doubt as to the match result in singles, as they dominated the first five courts. Sydney Lee won big at No. 1, picking up a 6-1, 6-1 win, Nikolina Batoshvili won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2, and Brissett provided the clinch with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 3. 

Audrey Yoon added a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 4 and Sarah Bahsoun rolled to a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 5. Arushi Malik dropped a tight first set tiebreaker 8-6 at the No. 6 line, but then rolled from there, winning the second set 6-1 and dominating the tiebreaker 10-2 to give CMS the singles sweep. 

The nightcap was strangely similar, as Batoshvili and Juan cruised to an 8-2 win at No. 3, Mary Washington pulled even at 1-1 with a tiebreaker win at No. 1 doubles, but CMS took the 2-1 lead with a comeback tiebreaker win. This time, Sydney Lee and Yoon rallied from down 7-5 at No. 2 to pull even at 7-7, and then dominated the tiebreaker 7-1. 

CMS then did not allow a single set in any of the six singles matches to go past 6-3. Selby won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 and Alisha Chulani captured a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 6 to make it a 4-1 CMS lead. Lee (6-3, 6-0 at No. 2), Brissett (6-3, 6-2 at No. 3) and Devon Wolfe (6-2, 6-0 at No. 4) then finished off their matches in rapid succession only a minute or two apart, before Juan capped off the singles sweep with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1.

Brissett and Lee were each perfect on the day with two singles win and one doubles win. Juan also won once in singles and twice doubles, while Yoon and Batoshvili were both 2-0 with a singles and a doubles win. 

CMS will be back in action when it travels to the ITA Indoor Nationals at Centre College next weekend, opening up against Carnegie Mellon on Friday at 10 a.m.
