Lee/Juan Fall in First Round to Fourth Seed at ITA Cup Division III Doubles Championship

ROME, Ga. - After reaching the ITA West Regional finals as the fifth-seeded team and qualifying for nationals, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis doubles team of Gabby Lee and Crystal Juan fell in the opening round to the fourth seed from the University of Chicago on Thursday afternoon at the Rome Tennis Center.

Lee and Juan battled through a tight first set against their seeded opponents, Chicago's Shianna Guo and Sylwia Mikos, who won the ITA Central Regional, before dropping a 6-4, 6-1 decision to fall into tomorrow's consolation bracket.

In the consolation bracket, the Athenas will face Daria Beshentseva and Victoria Vazquez of Kenyon on Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. local time (10 a.m. Pacific). Benshentseva and Vazquez fell into the consolations after dropping their opening match to Marissa Markey and Angie Zhou of Pomona-Pitzer, who defeated Lee and Juan in the ITA West Regional finals.

Juan is making her second trip to the ITA Cup, after also earning her way in 2019 with Anna Kern and reaching the semifinals to take All-America honors. That year, the ITA West Regionals featured four CMS teams in the semifinals, with Justine Leong and Catherine Allen defeating Juan and Kern in the finals, and then going on to win the ITA Cup title.
