Justine Leong Named SCIAC Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week for Second Time

CLAREMONT, Calif. - For the second time in her young career, first-year Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis player Justine Leong was named the SCIAC Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced today.

Leong first earned the honor on Jan. 20, after helping CMS sweep two matches from Hawaii Pacific, ranked No. 8 in Division II. After being idle last week, Leong made it a perfect 2-for-2 by winning again, after leading the Athenas to another Division II win, 7-0 over UC San Diego on Saturday.

Leong had a dominant performance at No. 1 singles on Saturday, winning 6-1, 6-3 to earn the first singles point for CMS. She improved to 14-1 on the year in singles, with the only loss coming to Jada Hart of UCLA in the ITA Fall Championships (after earning a win in the opening round over Janice Shin of Stanford).

In addition to her singles win, Leong also improved to 14-1 in doubles with a tiebreaker win at No. 1, along with doubles partner Catherine Allen. Leong and Allen earned the ITA Division III national championship in the fall, and played together in dual competition for the first time, dominating the tiebreaker 7-1 to earn the 8-7 win. Leong now stands at 13-1 in doubles, making her 27-2 combined so far in her young career.

CMS will be back in action in two weeks for a tripleheader at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center, taking on Occidental (10 a.m.), Whittier (1 p.m.) and San Diego Christian (7 p.m.).
