CMS Women's Tennis Compiles 20-4 Singles Record at Fall Scramble

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team combined for 20 singles wins while dropping only four on the second day of its annual Fall Scramble on Saturday afternoon at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.

CMS also had a 14-5 record in doubles on the first day of the Fall Scramble on Friday, giving it a combined 34-9 record in its first action of the season, which came against Pomona-Pitzer, Concordia Irvine, Azusa Pacific and Westmont. 

On Saturday, first-years Justine Leong, Anna Kern and Gabby Lee all went 2-0 in their first collegiate singles action. Leong defeated Ghazal Pakbaten, Concordia's No. 1 singles player, 2-6, 6-1, 12-10 in one of the most dramatic wins of the day, and also earned a 6-4, 6-2 win over Maria Lyven of Pomona-Pitzer. Kern earned wins over Pomona-Pitzer and Westmont, while Lee earned a third-set tiebreaker win over Azusa Pacific and a straight-set win over Westmont. 

Sophomore Sarah Bahsoun was also 2-0, picking up a comeback 4-6, 6-1, 10-4 win over Westmont's No. 1 Cade Pierson, an NAIA All-American last year, as well as a 6-4, 6-4 win against Azusa Pacific. Junior Rebecca Berger picked up two straight-set wins to improve to 5-0 on the opening weekend including doubles, while sophomore Crystal Juan also went 5-0 on the weekend after a 7-6, 6-3 win over Pomona-Pitzer and a 6-3, 6-2 win over Westmont following a perfect day of doubles on Friday. 

The most dominant singles performance went to sophomore transfer Devon Wolfe, who dropped only one game in two matches, winning 6-0, 6-0 against Concordia and 6-0, 6-1 against Azusa Pacific. Senior Anastasia Bryan-Ajania earned a 6-0, 6-0 win against Pomona-Pitzer and a 6-3, 6-0 win over Concordia in a dominant afternoon. Sophomore Georgia Tuckerman won her two matches the day by the same 6-2, 6-1 score over Concordia and Pomona-Pitzer. 

CMS will be back in action in two weeks when it hosts the ITA West Regionals from Oct. 4-6 at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
