No. 2 CMS Women's Tennis Takes 9-0 Home Win over Whittier

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The second-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team shut out a SCIAC opponent for the second straight day at home, defeating Whittier 9-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.

With the win, CMS improves to 18-1 on the year, while winning its 11th match in a row and improving to 4-0 in SCIAC after also shutting out Chapman 9-0 yesterday. The Athenas improved to 12-0 at home on the year, where they have outscored their opponents by an aggregate score of 107-5, without surrendering more than one point in any home match. 

The Athenas only dropped five singles games on six courts combined against Whittier as they finished off the match in just over two hours. Junior Nicole Tan (No. 1 singles), sophomore Caroline Cox (No. 3 singles) and senior Jessie Cruz (No. 5 singles) all won by 6-0, 6-0 scores. Cruz was the first to finish to put CMS ahead 4-0, and freshman Sarah Bahsoun followed with the clinching win at No. 4 singles, winning 6-1, 6-1. 

After Cox won her match to make it 6-0, junior Anastasia Bryan-Ajania made it a 7-0 lead with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6. Tan then finished off her 6-0, 6-0 win, and freshman Sydney Lee capped off the shutout with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2. 

CMS was challenged a little more in doubles, but was able to come away with the 3-0 sweep. Sophomore Rebecca Berger and junior Madison Shea earned an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles for the final point. Freshman Crystal Juan and Georgia Tuckerman were the first to finish at No. 3 with an 8-3 win, while Cruz and junior Juliette Martin won 8-2 at No. 2 to put the Athenas ahead 2-0.

CMS has now won 28 conference matches in a row, since a 5-4 defeat at Pomona-Pitzer in the 2016 regular season, including 4-0 this season.

The Athenas will be back in action on Friday, when they travel to Redlands for a 3 p.m. contest.
