CMS Women's Tennis Returns to SCIAC Play with 9-0 Win over Chapman

CLAREMONT, Calif. - After nearly two months worth of non-league matches, the No. 2 ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team got back to SCIAC play and picked up a 9-0 win over Chapman on Friday afternoon at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.

With the win, the Athenas now stand at 17-1 on the year and 3-0 in league play, as well as 12-0 at home. In those 12 home matches, CMS has outscored its opponents by an aggregate score of 97-5, as no team has taken more than one point off the Athenas at Biszantz all year. Chapman slips to 2-0 overall and 1-1 in SCIAC with the loss. 

CMS completed a 3-0 doubles sweep in a half hour's time, with the closest result at No. 1, where sophomore Caroline Cox and junior Catherine Allen won 8-3 to improve to 21-1 on the year (with the only loss to Division II UC San Diego). Junior Nicole Tan and freshman Sarah Bahsoun captured an 8-1 win at No. 2, and junior Juliette Martin and freshman Sydney Lee, playing together for the first time, won 8-0 at No. 3. 

The Athenas quickly earned the clinch, as junior Anastasia Bryan-Ajania was first to finish with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles to put CMS ahead 4-0. Senior Jessie Cruz, playing at No. 3 singles, provided the fifth and deciding point with a 6-0, 6-1 win. 

With the team win in hand, CMS kept adding individual victories, as Allen made it a 6-0 lead with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles, remaining undefeated this season in dual matches at 12-0 (all while playing at No. 1). After freshman Crystal Juan became the second Athena with a perfect 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles, sophomore Rebecca Berger joined Allen in extending her dual singles record to 12-0 with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 2. 

Junior Madison Shea was in an early deficit in the first set at No. 5 singles, but then kicked in and won the last 10 games in succession to finish off a 6-3, 6-0 win and complete the 9-0 win for the Athenas. CMS extended its winning streak against SCIAC opponents to 27 straight, since dropping a 5-4 decision to Pomona-Pitzer in 2016. 

CMS will be back in action tomorrow for another SCIAC match at Biszantz, taking on Whittier at 3 p.m.
