CMS Women's Tennis Moves to 5-0 with 8-1 Win over Brandeis

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Junior Catherine Allen and sophomore Rebecca Berger each won singles matches 6-0, 6-0, as the No. 1 ranked CMS women's tennis team continued its hot start to the 2019 spring season with an 8-1 win over Brandeis on Saturday night at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.

CMS starts out the spring season with a 5-0 record after winning four matches in three days on Feb. 8-10, defeating Division I Idaho State, SCIAC foes Occidental and Caltech, and Division II UC San Diego. The match at UC San Diego came down to the wire, with CMS winning 4-3, but the other matches have all seen the Athenas win handily.

Allen, who picked up her shutout win at No. 1 singles also combined with sophomore Caroline Cox, the No. 1 ranked doubles team in Division III, for an 8-4 win in doubles. Berger played at No. 4 to earn her 6-0, 6-0 win, while Cox almost added a third shutout at No. 5 before settling for a 6-0, 6-2 win.

Brandeis earned its one point at No. 3 doubles, where Ana Hatfield and Sophia He earned an 8-5 win. Junior Nicole Tan and freshman Sarah Bahsoun added an 8-1 win at No. 2 to go along with the Allen/Cox win at No. 1, to give CMS a 2-1 lead going into singles.

The Athenas then came out and dominated early in singles to take away any thought of drama for the team win. Allen, Berger and Cox all won their first sets 6-0, while Tan (No. 2) and freshman Crystal Juan (No. 6) cruised to 6-2 wins. Freshman Sydney Lee earned her first set 6-4 to give CMS a clean sweep of all six courts.

Tan finished off a 6-2, 6-2 win and Juan won her match 6-2, 6-3, but Lee had to go to a third set at No. 3 after Karen Khromchenko won the second set 6-3. Lee regrouped to take the third-set tiebreaker 10-6 to finish off a single sweep.

CMS is back in action next weekend when it travels to Nashville to participate in the ITA Indoor Nationals. The Athenas open play on Friday against WashU, with the second and third rounds taking place on Saturday and Sunday.
