Rebecca Berger Named SCIAC Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Sophomore Rebecca Berger was named the SCIAC Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week for matches through Sunday, Feb. 10, the league office announced today.

Berger earned the honor after a big singles win in a 4-3 victory over UC San Diego, which is ranked No. 18 in Division II, on Sunday to complete a 4-0 opening weekend. After the Tritons tied the score at 3-3 with a win at No. 2 singles, Berger, who was playing at No. 3, forced a third set to keep the Athenas in the match.

The third and decisive set, with all of the other courts finished, went all the way to a tiebreaker after the two players split the first 12 games 6-6. With her match going past the three-hour mark, Berger was able to dig deep and come away with a 7-4 win in the tiebreaker to complete a 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 win and give the narrow victory to the Athenas.

Berger also picked up a third-set tiebreaker win on opening day (3-6, 6-1, 10-6), when the Athenas earned a 6-1 win over Division I Idaho State on Friday at the Biszantz Tennis Center. CMS also took two SCIAC matches on Saturday over Caltech and Occidental, with Berger picking up an 8-0 win in doubles with freshman Sydney Lee

CMS will be back in action in 11 days, when it hosts Brandeis on Saturday, Feb. 23 at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
