CMS Women's Tennis Opens Spring Schedule with 6-1 Win over Division I Idaho State

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Catherine Allen, Caroline Cox and Sarah Bahsoun all swept singles and doubles as the defending national champion and No. 1 ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team opened its spring schedule with a 6-1 win over Division I Idaho State on Friday afternoon at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.

The win was the first dual of the 2018-19 season for the Athenas, who start out 1-0, while Idaho State slips to 2-2 with the loss. The game was played with Division I scoring rules, with doubles counting as one point (instead of three at the Division III level). 

Allen won at No. 1 singles (6-4, 6-2) and teamed with Cox for an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles, which clinched the doubles point for CMS. Allen and Cox enter the spring as the No. 1 ranked doubles team in all of NCAA Division III by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, after winning the national title of the ITA Cup in the fall. 

Bahsoun, who was playing in her first collegiate dual match, added a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 5 singles, which clinched the team win by putting the Athenas ahead 4-0 (after Cox and Allen won at No. 4 and No. 1, respectively). She also teamed with junior Nicole Tan for a dominant 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles, the first doubles match to reach its completion. 

Juniors Juliette Martin and Madison Shea capped off the doubles sweep with an 8-4 win at No. 3. Sophomore Rebecca Berger, whose last dual singles match was the clincher in a 5-4 win over Emory in last year's national championship, came back after dropping the first set to earn a 3-6, 6-1, 10-6 win at No. 3 singles to put CMS ahead 5-0, and freshman Sydney Lee earned a 6-1, 7-5 victory at No. 2. 

Megan Poe salvaged the lone point for the Bengals at No. 6 singles, outlasting senior Jessie Cruz 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 in a three-setter. 

CMS will be back in action tomorrow when it opens SCIAC play with a pair of road dual matches, meeting Caltech first at 10 a.m., followed by a match at Occidental at 2 p.m.
