Allen, Cox Earn Second Seed at ITA Nationals, Open Thursday against NYU

ROME, Georgia - Junior Catherine Allen and sophomore Caroline Cox, who earned the ITA West Region doubles championship on Sept. 30, earned the second seed at the 2018 ITA Cup at the Rome Tennis Center for the defending national champion Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team, and will open play at 1:30 p.m. (Eastern Time) in a quarterfinal matchup with Coco Kulle and Flyora Shiyanova of NYU.

Allen and Cox earned their way to the ITA Nationals with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Caroline Casper and Arianna Chen of Pomona-Pitzer in the West Regional finals at Pomona-Pitzer's Pauley Courts 10 days ago, while NYU's team earned the ITA Northeast Region championship with a win over Vassar (3-6, 6-1, 7-5).

The winner of the CMS-NYU matchup will move on to the semifinal and face either the No. 3 seed (Emory's Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico and Jessica Fatemi) or the winner of a play-in match between Trinity (Texas) and Whitman. The top seed in the other half of the draw is Kristina Yu and Victoria Yu of Wesleyan, while Jessica Liu and Madeliene Paolucci of Case Western are the No. 4 seed.

Allen competed at the ITA Cup last year in singles after winning the West Region title, ending up with a third-place finish, and will be making her first appearance in doubles. She and Cox were one of the doubles teams for the Athenas in last year's national championship run, playing in the No. 2 spot, and both picked up singles wins in a 5-4 victory over Emory in the national championship match.

The ITA Cup will run from Thursday-Sunday. For a complete listing of tournament events, schedules and links to live scoring and live video, go to the tournament home page at the link below:
