Catherine Allen Advances to ITA West Regional Finals in Singles for CMS Women's Tennis

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Junior Catherine Allen won both her quarterfinal and semifinal matchup in singles on Saturday at the ITA West Regionals while dropping only two games combined, while also moving on to the semifinals in doubles with partner Caroline Cox.

Allen made quick work of both her singles matches on Saturday, defeating Arianna Chen of Pomona-Pitzer and Christie Kurdys of Cal Lutheran by 6-1, 6-0 scores. She will face Pomona-Pitzer's Caroline Casper in the championship match tomorrow at 10:30 a.m., after Casper overcame a tough challenge from Athena freshman Sydney Lee before prevailing 6-4, 7-6 (7-5). Casper also eliminated Jessie Cruz of CMS in the quarterfinals in another tough battle, 6-4, 6-4, while Lee won an Athena vs. Athena battle against Cox in her quarterfinal.

Cox and Allen earned a pair of doubles wins on Saturday, advancing into the quarterfinals with an 8-4 win over Pomona-Pitzer's doubles team (Jacinta Chen and Jay Kim), and then cruising into the semis with an 8-1 win over UC Santa Cruz. They will face another Pomona-Pitzer team in the semifinals tomorrow at 9 a.m. (Marghi Andreassi and Maria Lyven).

CMS also has another doubles team still alive in the bottom half of the bracket, as Lee and Cruz took an 8-1 win over Melisha Dogra and Alex Ferry of Pomona-Pitzer, and then won an 8-4 decision over Cal Lutheran. They will face Casper and Chen from Pomona-Pitzer at 9 a.m. tomorrow for the right to move onto the finals.

CMS is the defending national champion in NCAA Division III after taking the program's first national title last year against Emory at home at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
