Allen Advances in Singles, Brown/Tan Move into Doubles Quarters

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Just hours after the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team claimed the team National Championship, a small handful of Athenas were back on the court competing for individual honors. Four Athenas began play in the NCAA Division III Singles and Doubles Women's Tennis Tournaments. After two rounds of play in the singles bracket, Catherine Allen (CMC) is the lone CMS representative standing on the women's side and in doubles play, the duo of Nicole Tan (CMC) and Lindsay Brown (CMC) won their opening match to also head to Friday's quarterfinal.

Catherine Allen came into the Tournament as the sixth-overall seed in the singles and earned a pair of victories on Thursday to advance into the quarterfinals along with seven other competitors. Allen opened her day with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Wisconsin-Whitewater's Gabrielle Kitchell to advance into the second round. Once there, Allen claimed a comfortable 6-0, 6-4 victory over John Carroll's Lauren O'Malley to move into Friday's quarterfinal match. Allen is slated to play third-seeded, Elyssa Kohrs from MIT on Friday in the late morning with the semifinals following should Allen move on.

Lindsay Brown (CMC) and Nicole Tan were also in action on Thursday, each claiming a victory in the opening round before bowing out of the tournament in the second round. Brown played a pair of three set matches, earning a hard-fought 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 victory over Claire Handa of Chicago before falling by a 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 final against Middlebury's Katherine Hughes.

Tan had a similar run through the 2018 singles tournament, earning a 7-6 (3), 6-3 victory over Christopher Newport's Johanna Ranta-Aho in the opening round. Like Brown, she would be defeated in the second round by a Middlebury Panther, falling by a 6-2, 6-0 final to Heather Boehm.

In doubles play, the team of Catherine Allen and Caroline Cox (CMC) were ousted by top-seeded team of Eudice Chong and Victoria Yu from Wesleyan (CT) by a score of 6-1, 6-1, but the squad of Nicole Tan and Lindsay Brown won their first round match to advance to the quarterfinals. Tan and Brown got some redemption for their singles losses to the Middlebury Panthers with a 6-4, 7-6 (3) victory over Middlebury's Katherine Hughes and Skylar Schossberger to book a trip to the quarters against the Amherst duo of Anya Ivenitsky and Averey Wagman tomorrow evening.

Play resumes at the Biszantz Family tennis center tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m. with Catherine Allen expected on the court around 10:30 a.m. for her singles match. Brown and Tan are scheduled on the court sometime after 4:30 p.m.
