No. 3 Athenas Prepared to Host NCAA Regional Play

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team begins play in the NCAA Tournament this weekend when the Athenas host the First, Second, and Third Rounds at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. By way of their 24-2 overall record, the Athenas earned a bye through the First Round of the Tournament and will begin play against the winner of the First Round match-up between No. 37 UT Tyler and No. 27 Whitman. The Patriots and Blues play on Thursday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. CMS will square off with the winner at 10:00 a.m. on Friday with No. 7 Pomona-Pitzer and No. 20 Trinity (TX) competing in the other Second Round match.

The winners of Friday's match will meet in the Regional Championship on Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. with a trip to the National Championship Week on the line.

The Athenas arrive at the 2018 NCAA Regional as one of the most battle-tested teams in the field. CMS has played 11 matches against teams currently ranked in the top-25 as well as a handful of matches against strong Division II and NAIA schools. CMS own an overall record of 24-2, with the two losses coming in the same weekend by 5-4 scores against No. 1 Emory and No. 2 Williams. CMS is rolling as of late and has dropped just three team points since the end of March. Catherine Allen was named the SCIAC Athlete of the Year to lead six Athenas that earned All-SCIAC this season.

The Sagehens arrived in the 2018 NCAA Tournament by way of an at-large bid after falling in the SCIAC Championship against the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas 5-0. This season, Pomona-Pitzer played 13 of their 21 matches against teams currently ranked in the top-25. The Sagehens went 6-7 against those top teams. Pomona-Pitzer earned four All-SCIAC honors with Maryann Zhao and Caroline Casper leading the way with First Team accolades. Zhao went 14-5 in singles play while Casper turned in a 10-9 mark while splitting time at the top two singles spots.

Trinity arrives in the NCAA Tournament after winning the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship with a 5-0 victory over Southwestern (TX) in the Conference Title match. Trinity's Conference Championship is their fifth-straight and Five Tigers from this year's team earned All-Conference honors from the SCAC. The Tigers were led in 2018 by SCAC Player of the Year, junior Caroline Kutach. She held a 14-6 record at the top singles spot this season. After starting the season with a 4-10 record in dual matches, Trinity hasn't lost since mid-April and have won nine-straight matches to end the season.

Whitman defeated the top-seeded Linfield Wildcats 5-3 in the NWC Championship back in the middle of April to clinch a return trip to the NCAA Tournament and Claremont, Calif. for the Regional. The Blues are an experienced team with five of the six members of the roster with singles matches in last year's regionals under their belt. Prior to their Conference Tournament, four Blues earned All-NWC with Mary Hill and Andrea Gu named First Team and Hanna Greenberg and Lori Sheng honored as Second Team members.

The Patriots claimed their ninth American Southwestern Conference title in dramatic fashion over UT Dallas last weekend. With the team match tied 4-4, just No. 1 singles were still playing. The Patriots' Marisa Quevedo trailed 5-2 in the second set after dropping the first set. The All-ASC player battled back and claim a 4-6, 7-5, 6-0 victory to clinch the Championship. Quevedo was the only UT Tyler singles player named All-Conference with a 3-0 record in divisional matches. Alexis Arrieta and Alexandra McKissick were also named All-ASC in doubles play with head coach Adam Cohen earning Coach of the Year.
