Women's Tennis Sails Past No. 15 Washington and Lee

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team wrapped up the regular season with a 9-0 sweep of the No. 15 Washington and Lee Generals. The victory gives the Athenas a 22-2 overall record heading into the SCIAC Tournament. After cruising through doubles, the Athenas handled the Generals in singles as well, earning five victories in straight sets.

Lindsay Brown (CMC) Caroline Cox (CMC), and Anastasia Bryan-Ajania (SC) led the dominate effort with identical 6-1, 6-1 win at #2, #4, and #5 singles matches, respectively.

The final regular season match started with a ceremony, honoring the Athenas' two graduating seniors, Kyla Scott (HMC) and Lindsay Brown. Both Brown and Scott helped the Athenas to a doubles sweep with 8-4 victories in their matches. The victories however, came on different courts. Brown paired up with Nicole Tan (CMC) to win the top doubles match with an 8-4 final while on court three, Scott and Juliette Martin (HMC) took down the Generals' team of Anna Kreynin and Claudia Kesala by an 8-4 final as well.

The middle doubles match was claimed by the CMS team of Catherine Allen (SC) and Caroline Cox. Allen and Cox combined for an 8-3 victory and the three doubles wins gave CMS a 3-0 lead heading into singles play.

The Athenas were just as dominate in singles play, dropping a total of 24 games with five straight-set victories. As mentioned, Brown, Cox and Bryan-Ajania controlled their matches from start to finish with wins of 6-1, 6-1.

Nicole Tan and Rebecca Berger (CMC) also won their first set by a score of 6-1 on courts one and three, respectively. Tan completed her victory with a score of 6-1, 6-4 in the #1 match and Berger earned a 6-1, 6-3 victory at #3 singles.

The lone match to extend past two sets was Madison Shea (CMC) on court six. Shea dropped her first set 6-1 to Washington & Lee's Lauren Hassell, before roaring back and taking set two 6-3, setting up a match tiebreaker. With all the momentum on her side, Shea took the tiebreaker 10-0 and won the match 1-6, 6-3, 10-0.

With the regular season wrapped-up, the Athenas will turn their attention to the SCIAC Tournament that begins on Friday, April 27. After a perfect 7-0 mark in SCIAC play, CMS will serve as the top seed for the Tournament. Be sure to check CMSathletics.org later this week for more information on the SCIAC Tournament.
