No. 2 Ephs Halt Winning Streak at 16 for No. 3 Women's Tennis

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team had their 16-match winning streak snapped on Saturday against the No. 2 Williams Ephs in a dramatic 5-4 decision. The match came down to the final court, but the Ephs had just enough left in the tank to earn the three-set victory on court six to clinch the match.

Williams started Saturday's match off by winning two of the three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead into singles play. The duo of Kyla Scott (HMC) and Juliette Martin (HMC) earned the lone Athenas' victory in doubles play, winning the #3 doubles match 8-4. Scott and Martin have combined for a  12-1 record in doubles play this season.

In singles play, the Ephs and Athenas split the top two courts. Nicole Tan (CMC) and CMS won the #2 singles match by a 6-2, 7-6 score, but Williams came out on top at #1 singles in straight-sets.

After the top two matches were decided in straight-sets, the final four matches of the day all went three sets. At #3 doubles, playing against Williams' Leah Bush, Lindsay Brown (CMC) controlled the first set of the match and earned the set 6-0. Bush then came back and took the second set 6-4 to force a decisive third set. Brown rallied back and claimed the set 6-2 to earn an important point for the Athenas to tie the match at 3-3 with three courts remaining in play.

After dropping the first set 7-6 to Kyla Scott, William's Chole Henderson rallied and won the second and third sets by identical 6-4 scores to put Williams back in front 4-3 in the match.

Caroline Cox (CMC) dropped the opening set of her match at #5 singles, but battled her way to 6-3 and 6-4 victories in the second and third sets to win the match 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 to once again tie the match at 4-4 overall.

With all attention turned to the #6 singles match, William's Julia Cancio outlasted Rebecca Berger in three sets, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 to win the match 5-4 in a battle between a pair of top-three teams.

As mentioned, Saturday's results ends the Athenas' season opening winning streak at 16 matches. Things do not get any easier for the Athenas. CMS is next in action on Sunday when they host the No. 1 Emory Eagles at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center at 10:00 a.m.
