Athenas Corral No. 8 Jumbos, Move to 16-0

CLAREMONT, Calif. – In their fourth-straight match against a top-15 team, the No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas edged the No. 8 Tufts University Jumbos 5-4 at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center on Wednesday night. After the match was delayed nearly an hour, the Athenas took a 2-1 lead after doubles play and won just enough of their singles matches to hold off the Jumbos. Nicole Tan (CMC) and Catherine Allen (SC) were both perfect on the day, picking up wins in doubles and singles play.

Rebecca Berger (CMC) clinched the match for the Athenas with their fifth point of the match at the #6 singles match, winning 6-2, 6-1.

The victory runs the Athenas' season-opening winning streak to 16 matches.

As mentioned, the Athenas got the ball rolling with a 2-1 edge in doubles play. Lindsay Brown (CMC) and Nicole Tan combined for an 8-4 victory at the top doubles match to improve their doubles record on the season to 10-1. Catherine Allen and Caroline Cox (CMC) teamed up for a convincing 8-1 victory at #2 doubles. Allen and Cox have paired for a perfect, 13-0 mark in doubles play so far this season.

In singles play, Tan and Allen both earned quick victories at the top two singles spots to put CMS up 4-1 before Rebecca Berger clinched the match with her ninth singles victory of the season in the #6 spot. Tan, Allen, and Berger each won their first set by a 6-2 score before taking slightly different route to their straight-set sweeps. Berger put away Tufts' Kiara Rose 6-1 in the second set for the most convincing of the victories. Allen mirrored her first set, going 6-2, 6-2 to earn the victory, while Tan claimed the top singles spot with a 6-2, 6-4 victory in the match.

The Athenas will now face their biggest tests of the season in the next week when they welcome the top two teams in the country to the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. No. 2 Williams Ephs will serve as the appetizer on Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m. before the No. 3 CMS Athenas square off with the No. 1 Emory Eagles on Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m.
