No. 3 Women's Tennis Tops No. 11 Amherst at Home

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team defeated the No. 11 Amherst Mammoths 6-3 on Thursday afternoon at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. The Athenas took the top two doubles matches before claiming four of the six singles matches for the top-15 victory.

The Athenas began Thursday's match with victories on the top two courts of doubles. Catherine Allen (SC) and Caroline Cox (CMC) were the first team off the court with a strong 8-2 victory at #2 doubles. The team of Lindsay Brown (CMC) and Nicole Tan (CMC) were the next team to earn a point. The duo picked up an 8-3 victory at #1 doubles to give CMS a 2-0 lead in the match.

A tight battle on the #3 doubles court favored the Mammoths, with Amherst claiming an 8-6 victory. CMS held a 2-1 lead heading to singles, but Nicole Tan and Lindsay Brown both turned in dominate performances to earn two quick points for CMS. Tan won 6-2, 6-0 to earn the Athenas' first singles point of the match at the #2 match. At #3 singles, Brown was off the court next, earning a 6-2, 6-1 victory to put CMS up 4-1.

Catherine Allen clinched the match for the Athenas with a 6-3, 7-5 victory at the top singles match, earning the fifth point for the Athenas.

After CMS clinched the match, the Mammoths won two of the final three points at #4 and #5 singles. Jessie Cruz (CMC) claimed the last CMS point with a 7-6, 6-2 victory at #6 singles.

With their 6-3 victory, the Athenas earned their seventh victory over a ranked team this season.

CMS moves to 13-0 on the season and the Athenas will next be in action on Saturday with matches against Bowdoin (10:00 a.m.) and Sewanee (2:00 p.m.).
