Athenas Earn 10th Win to Open Season, Top No. 16 Tigers

AUSTIN, Texas – The No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team earned another top-25 victory with a convincing win over No. 16 Trinity (TX) on Saturday morning. The Athenas earned their second 8-1 victory in as many days. CMS swept doubles play to build a 3-0 lead. After a win by Kyla Scott (HMC) at #4 singles, Lindsay Brown (CMC) secured the victory for the Athenas at #3 singles with a 6-0, 6-1 win for the fifth point of the match for CMS.

CMS added singles victories from Nicole Tan (CMC), Caroline Cox (CMC), and Anastasia Bryan-Ajania (SC) to run away with the 8-1 victory.

As mentioned, the Athenas swept the Tigers in doubles play. CMS dropped just five games across the three doubles matches. The team of Juliette Martin (HMC) and Scott swept their way through #3 doubles, earning an 8-0 win. Catherine Allen (SC) and Cox teamed up to earn an 8-2 victory at #2 doubles while Brown and Nicole Tan (CMC) held down the top doubles spot, winning 8-3 to help the Athenas take a 3-0 lead into singles play.

Kyla Scott was the first to earn a singles point for CMS, taking the #4 match by a score of 6-2, 6-0. Strong second sets was a theme for the Athenas on the morning. Like Scott before them, Tan, Cox, and Bryan-Ajania also turned in dominate efforts in second set of sweeps in singles play. Cox won her first set 6-3 before cruising to a 6-0 victory in the second set to win the #5 singles match 6-3, 6-0. Bryan-Ajania claimed the first set of the #6 singles match 6-4 before claiming the final set 6-1.

Nicole Tan had the toughest opening set of any Athena in singles play. She claimed the opening set 7-6 before completing the sweep with a 6-2 victory in the second set.

Lindsay Brown had the cleanest singles victory of anyone on Saturday morning. Brown dropped just one game en route to a 6-0, 6-1 victory in #3 singles. As noted, Brown's victory clinched the 10th victory for the Athenas to open the 2018 season.

The Athenas wrap-up their quick trip to Texas with a match against East Texas Baptist in Georgetown, Texas at 4:00 p.m. CT/2:00 p.m. PT.
