CMS Tennis Teams Ready for ITA Regionals in Claremont this Weekend

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis and women's tennis teams will both be participating in the ITA West Regionals this weekend in Claremont, beginning on Friday morning at 8 a.m.
Three Athenas Make ITA Scholar-Athlete List; Team Also Recognized

Lindsay Brown (CMC ’18), Jessie Cruz, (CMC ’19), and Nicole Tan (CMC ’20) of the national champion Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s tennis team each were selected as Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Scholar Athletes for the 2018 season. As a team, the Athenas were recognized with the ITA All-Academic Team award.

Just a couple weeks after claiming their first National Championship in program history, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s tennis team was well represented on the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III All-America Teams. Catherine Allen (SC), Lindsay Brown (CMC), and Nicole Tan (CMC) earned All-America honors as individuals with Brown and Tan earning accolades as a doubles pair as well.
CMS has another record year in the Directors’ Cup standings

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athletics is ranked third in the 2017-18 Division III Learfield Directors’ Cup standings, the program’s highest finish ever. This is the second-straight year that CMS has finished in the top-5 in the country.
Historic 2018 Season Wraps Friday in Individual Play

A historic 2018 season for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s tennis team came to an end on Friday evening when the final Athenas left in the women’s tennis individual and doubles tournaments. Catherine Allen advanced to the semifinals in the singles competition, but a lengthy three-set battle with Wesleyan’s Victoria Yu went in favor of the Cardinals’ junior. The doubles team of Nicole Tan (CMC) and Lindsay Brown (CMC) also wrapped up their run through the tournament with a three-set quarterfinal loss.

Allen Advances in Singles, Brown/Tan Move into Doubles Quarters

Just hours after the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s tennis team claimed the team National Championship, a small handful of Athenas were back on the court competing for individual honors. Four Athenas began play in the NCAA Division III Singles and Doubles Women’s Tennis Tournaments. After two rounds of play in the singles bracket, Catherine Allen (CMC) is the lone CMS representative standing on the women’s side and in doubles play, the duo of Nicole Tan (CMC) and Lindsay Brown (CMC) won their opening match to also head to Friday’s quarterfinal.
Home Sweet Home: Athenas Clinch First National Title at Biszantz

For a majority of the year, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas were ranked third in the country behind the No. 1 Emory Eagles and No. 2 Williams Ephs. For the past two decades, Emory and Williams have ruled atop NCAA Division III women's tennis, combining for the last 10 National Championships and 16 of the last 17 Titles. This week the Athenas toppled both giants on back-to-back days to claim the first National Championship in program history. Wednesday's title fight lived up to the billing with Emory and CMS trading blows throughout the entire match. In the end, it was the Athenas that landed the knockout punch from freshman Rebecca Berger (CMC) on court three with a 6-2, 6-3 win that locked up a comeback 5-4 victory for the Athenas, clinching their first NCAA Division III National Championship in program history.

Trailing 3-1 after dropping the first singles match, the No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas rattled off four-straight singles wins to clinch their first-ever appearance in the National Championship Match with a 5-3 victory over the No. 2 Williams Ephs in the National Semifinals. The victory snaps a 34-match winning streak for the defending National Champion Ephs that dates back to Apr. 9, 2017. Rebecca Berger (CMC) broke her Williams’ opponent to clinch the match for the Athenas with a thrilling 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 5 singles.
Kyla Clinches, Athenas Sweep Their Way to National Semifinals

The No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas defended their home court in the National Quarterfinals on Monday evening at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center with a 5-0 sweep of the MIT Engineers. After a clean sweep through doubles play, seniors Lindsay Brown (CMC) and Kyla Scott (HMC) earned victories in the No. 3 and No. 4 singles matches, respectively to clinch CMS' spot in the National Semifinals against the No. 2 Williams Ephs. Tuesday’s semifinal against the Ephs is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m.
Athenas to Host National Championships at Biszantz Starting Monday

The No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team is making their eighth-straight appearance in the National Quarterfinals after defeating No. 7 Pomona-Pitzer for the third time this season at the NCAA Regional this past weekend. The Athenas don't have far to travel, as this year's National Championships are hosted by CMS at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. The eight teams still standing include the top-five ranked teams in the nation, as well as three others ranked in the top-15.

Regional Champs! Athenas Advance to National Quarterfinals

For the eighth-straight season, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team is one of the final eight teams standing at the end of the season. On a cool and damp Saturday afternoon, the Athenas advanced to the 2018 Women's Tennis National Quarterfinals after winning the Claremont Regional with a 5-0 victory over the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens. The Athenas battled their way through doubles play to earn a 3-0 lead heading into the six singles matches. Lindsay Brown (CMC) earned the fourth team point for CMS with a 6-3, 6-2 victory on court three before Caroline Cox (CMC) clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-3 win in the final singles match.
Women's Tennis Sweeps Their Way to Regional Final

The No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team advanced to the Regional Championship in the NCAA Tournament with a 5-0 victory over the No. 27 Whitman Blues on Friday afternoon. The Athenas swept their way through doubles play before clinching the first two singles matches to earn the 5-0 victory. CMS made quick work of the Blues in doubles play, winning all three matches by scores of 8-2. Lindsay Brown (CMC) and Nicole Tan (CMC) teamed up at the top doubles match to earn a convincing win. For Catherine Allen (SC) and Caroline Cox (CMC) it was much of the same at No. 2 doubles. Kyla Scott (HMC) and Juliette Martin (CMC) followed suit with and 8-2 victory to head into singles play with a convincing 3-0 lead.
No. 3 Athenas Prepared to Host NCAA Regional Play

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team begins play in the NCAA Tournament this weekend when the Athenas host the First, Second, and Third Rounds at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. By way of their 24-2 overall record, the Athenas earned a bye through the First Round of the Tournament and will begin play against the winner of the First Round match-up between No. 37 UT Tyler and No. 27 Whitman. The Patriots and Blues play on Thursday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. CMS will square off with the winner at 10:00 a.m. on Friday with No. 7 Pomona-Pitzer and No. 20 Trinity (TX) competing in the other Second Round match.
