Tan’s match point sends CMS to Final Four

[Post-match Interview with Kuosman, Scott and Brown]

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team got off to a rolling start in the NCAA Championship at Chattanooga, Tennessee, defeating No. 11 Washington University in St. Louis 5-1 in the quarterfinals. The No. 1 Athenas were tested in the doubles matches as the results could have gone either way, but they demonstrated a stronger depth of talent in the singles.

Senior Katie Kuosman (CMC) and freshman Catherine Allen (SC) were the first to finish their doubles match, pulling away after leading 3-2 with an 8-4 victory. No. 1 pair junior Lindsay Brown (CMC) and freshman Nicole Tan (CMC) started off with a 2-1 lead, but ran into trouble as their opponents Rebecca Ho and Kaylan Griffith fought back to win 8-4. Junior Kyla Scott (HMC) and freshman Jessie Cruz (CMC) trailed 2-1, but found their rhythm at the right time as they bounced back with a tight 8-6 win to give CMS a 2-1 lead.

The Athenas got the job done in singles, starting with Brown who quickly finished her match with a pair of 6-1 wins to extend CMS' lead 3-1. Kuosman followed quickly with a 6-1 and 6-2 win over Kate Lee, and Tan avenged her doubles loss with a swift 6-1 and 6-2 win over Grace Deering to seal the match.

CMS will face No. 3 Emory University tomorrow at 11 a.m. PDT in the semifinals. The Eagles won against Bowdoin 5-1 in their quarterfinal match and went 16-6 during the regular season.
