Stags and Athenas open national title run at Chattanooga
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The field is set for the Elite Eight of the NCAA Men's and Women's Tennis Team Championships. Team competition will span May 22-24 with the championship matches at 11 a.m. PDT for the men and 7 p.m. PDT for the women on Wednesday, May 24. Individual singles and doubles competition will begin on Thursday, May 25 and end on Saturday, May 27.
The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's team beat No. 13 Trinity (TX) at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center in the Third Round 5-0 to advance to the Elite Eight. The Stags are matched up with No. 5 Wesleyan in the NCAA Quarterfinals for a rematch from earlier this spring. The two teams met up in the Stag-Hen Invitational, a tournament co-hosted by CMS and Pomona-Pitzer, in the middle of March. CMS came out the victor with the 6-3 score by taking five of six singles matches. Going into the NCAA tournament, none of the Stags' doubles teams are the same as they were the last time they faced Wesleyan while the Cardinals have relied on the same three pairs all season. Wesleyan defeated No. 17 Johns Hopkins 5-1 in their Third Round matchup to advance to the Quarterfinals. The two teams will face off on the 22nd at 1:30 p.m. PDT.

The Athenas also hosted an NCAA Regional and bested cross-campus and conference rival No. 5 Pomona-Pitzer 5-3 in the Third Round. In the NCAA Quarterfinals, CMS faces No. 11 Washington University, St. Louis. The teams met up earlier this spring at the Trinity Invitational in San Antonio, Texas where the Athenas earned the 7-2 win. In that match, CMS swept the doubles competition with only one pairing the consistent with the current teams. WUSTL advanced to the Elite Eight by beating No. 21 hope College 5-3 in a Regional hosted by Wisconsin-Whitewater. CMS and WUSTL will play each other on the 22nd at 8:30 a.m. PDT.
