Win streak extended to 19 matches

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Over the weekend, the No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team earned three more victories including two over SCIAC competition – No. 25 Redlands and Whittier – and one against No. 19 in Division II, Point Loma Nazarene. The Athenas (19-0, 5-0) earned 9-0 victories against both Redlands Whittier but then was tested by Point Loma who managed two team points off the dominant CMS.

Without Kyla Scott (HMC), head coach Dave Schwarz shuffled up the lineup all weekend.

On Friday afternoon, the Athenas traveled to Redlands for their lone away SCIAC match of the season. Junior Lindsay Brown (CMC) paired with Madison Shea (CMC) for CMS' first team point with the 8-4 victory. Senior Katie Kuosman (CMC) and freshman Catherine Allen (SC), playing at the top position, followed suit with the 8-2 win and then freshmen Nicole Tan (CMC) and Juliette Martin (HMC) completed the doubles sweep with another 8-4 victory.

At No. 2, Allen went 6-1, 6-1 and then Brown at No. 4 clinched the match with the score of 6-0, 6-2. Kuosman and Ana Bryan-Ajania (SC) also won in straight sets. Playing at No. 1 for the second match in a row, Tan gutted out a first set win 7-6(3) and then cruised past her opponent 6-0 in the second.  The only set UR got on the day was at No. 6 for Madison Ross against junior Bria Smith (CMC), but Smith came roaring back to take the second 6-1 and then 10-3 in the match tiebreak.

Results vs. Redlands

Brown and Tan were reunited for the Saturday morning match against Whittier and easily won 8-1. Smith entered into the doubles lineup for the first time since the beginning of March and earned the 8-2 victory with Shea. Martin and freshman Lauren Yamagami (CMC) partnered for the 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles.

In singles, the Whittier players were not able to manage even a game against CMS players two through six: Shea, Bryan-Ajania, Smith, Yamagami, and Martin all won 6-0, 6-0. Sophomore Jessie Cruz (CMC) played the toughest match at No. 1 but still came away with the 6-3, 6-1 win.

In the most difficult match of the weekend, the Athenas hosted the No. 19-ranked team in Division II, Point Loma. Brown and Tan continued on their undefeated streak of the spring season winning easily, 8-2. Allen and Kuosman earned the 8-5 win to give CMS at least two points going into singles competition. On court three, Shea and Bryan-Ajania took their doubles match to a set tiebreaker, ultimately losing 9-8(6).

CMS went straight sets at No. 4, 1, and 3 as Cruz clinched the team victory with the 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 3. After winning the set tiebreaker in the first, 7-1, Kuosman took the second set 6-4. In the final two matches of the day, Allen and Bryan-Ajania came out on opposite ends of match tiebreakers. Allen won hers 11-9, coming back from dropping the second set. And then in a long match at No. 5, Bryan-Ajania was finally bested 11-9 to give Point Loma its second team point. CMS came away with the 7-2 victory and preserved its 19-0 record.

The Athenas go up against another Division II opponent in Azusa Pacific on Friday, April 14 at 4 p.m. and then returns to SCIAC competition on the following day at 10 a.m., hosting Occidental (3-9, 1-3).
