Another 9-0 sweep for Athenas

CLAREMONT, Calif. – After the huge 8-1 win vs. Middlebury the day before, the No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team (16-0) returned to the courts on Saturday, April 1 for a 9-0 blowout win against No. 28 Whitman (10-6). The Athenas demonstrated their depth by playing four different athletes than competed in the previous match.

Freshman Nicole Tan (CMC) and junior Lindsay Brown (CMC) set the tone for CMS at No. 1 doubles, as they have done all season. The duo remained unbeaten this spring with the 8-2 win on Saturday. Within seconds, the other doubles matches wrapped up as well with 8-3 wins by freshman Catherine Allen (SC) partnered with senior Katie Kuosman (CMC), and freshmen pair Madison Shea (CMC) and Juliette Martin (HMC).

Junior Bria Smith (CMC), freshman Lauren Yamagami (CMC) and Shea entered into the singles lineup for the Athenas. This pushed up Kuosman to No. 3 and Allen to No. 1 while freshman Ana Bryan-Ajania (SC) slipped in to play on court two, the highest she has played all spring.

Shea went 6-0, 6-1 for the first victory in singles play and then Allen at No. 1 clinched the victory, 6-1, 6-1. Kuosman and Smith also completed straight set wins with scores of 6-2, 6-4 and 6-0, 6-4 respectively. Yamagami's match at No. 5 was the only one that went to a match tiebreaker, which she ultimately won 10-4. Bryan-Ajania completed the sweep for the Athenas with the 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 2.

CMS hits the road for a rare away match this Friday, April 7. The Athenas (16-0, 3-0) will travel to Redlands to take on the No. 25 Bulldogs (5-9, 2-1).
