Cruz sisters face off in Athenas’ 7-2 victory over DI Lehigh

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team (9-0) earned their first win over an NCAA Division I program this season on Wednesday afternoon in the 7-2 victory over Lehigh University (3-4). The Mountain Hawks took just one point off the Athenas in each the doubles and singles competition while CMS dominated overall.

Doubles team of junior Lindsay Brown (CMC) and freshman Nicole Tan (CMC) cruised to a quick 8-0 win at No. 1 singles. Senior pair Kyla Scott (HMC) and Katie Kuosman (CMC) out-worked Leigh's team of Sibel Can and Leigh Friedman at No. 2 doubles. Then, Grace Lin and Cassidy Cruz earned a point over freshmen Madison Shea (CMC) and Catherine Allen (SC).

The name of Cruz is familiar because Lehigh's Cassidy is CMS' Jessie Cruz's (CMC) older sister. While the sisters did not play against each other on Wednesday, the similarities in their appearance and play style were remarkable.

In singles competition, Brown finished up first with a quick 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 6. Jessie Cruz wrapped up her match 6-2, 6-0 and then Kuosman beat the older Cruz sister at No. 5 6-2, 6-3 to clinch the win. Tan then won a match tie breaker 10-5 to beat Can at No. 2. Allen toughed out the 6-3, 6-4 win against Lehigh's Lin and then both teams sat down to watch the No. 1 court battle it out. Scott won the first set in a tiebreak and dropped the second 6-1. Finally, Christina Auyeung earned the 10-3 match tiebreak after many lengthy points.

The Athenas face No. 3 Bowdoin at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center on Saturday, March 18 at 10 a.m.
