Two more 9-0 sweeps for Athenas
CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team earned two 9-0 wins over Caltech and Christopher Newport over the weekend to improve to 8-0 this spring. The team played with two different lineups in the matches and still put together dominant performances.
Against Caltech in the morning match, freshman Catherine Allen (SC) teamed up with classmate Madison Shea (CMC) for the 8-2 victory at No. 1 singles over Julia Reisler and Kana Moriyama. Mudders Kyla Scott (HMC) paired with Juliette Martin (HMC) joined up for the 8-2 win as well. Another mixed-class team of junior Bria Smith (CMC) and Ana Bryan-Ajania (SC) swept their opponent 8-0 at No. 3 doubles.
With the commanding 3-0 lead after doubles, freshman Nicole Tan (CMC) and Allen cruised to 6-0, 6-0 wins at No. 1 and 2 singles. Sophomore Jessie Cruz (CMC) played at No. 3 singles and out-worked Angelica Zhou for the 6-3, 6-4 victory. Caltech only managed to take one set off Bryan-Ajania while freshman Lauren Yamagami (CMC) won in straight sets as well.
Scott played at No. 1 singles and doubles in the afternoon match against No. 34 Christopher Newport. She paired up with her 2016 partner, Cruz, to beat Alexandra Drye and McKinney Harwood handily, 8-1. Shea and Martin joined for the 8-4 win in the tough match vs. Kate Huck and Johanna Ranto-aho.
Ranta-aho faced Allen at No. 2 singles in a difficult matchup during which Allen pulled out the 6-1, 6-2 win. The Captains earned two set wins in singles but Bryan-Ajania and Yamagami came back in the tie-breakers to win 10-2 and 12-10 respectively to preserve the sweep.
The No. 5 Athenas get busy over Spring Break with three matches during the week. Lehigh (3-3) comes to town on March 15 and then CMS has a rematch of last season's quarterfinals in the National Tournament with No. 4 Bowdoin (1-0) on March 18. Spring Break wraps up with Sewanee (5-2) on Sunday, March 19 at 10 a.m.
