Athenas outplay Brandeis in 9-0 sweep

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team (3-0) swept its way to a 9-0 victory against No. 28 Brandeis (2-1) on Tuesday afternoon at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. The entire contest was more competitive than the score suggests as several standout players from the Judges proved to be a challenge for the Athenas.

"Brandeis is always nationally competitive, so it's good to get that game under our belt," Head Coach Dave Schwarz said. "Our top two played some really strong players in singles. It was a good result against quality players."

Senior Katie Kuosman (CMC) and freshman Nicole Tan (CMC) faced some challenges early on in their No. 1 doubles match against Sabrina Ross-Neergaard and Olivia Leavitt, but managed to edge them out for an 8-5 win. No. 2 doubles pair junior Lindsay Brown (CMC) and freshman Catherine Allen (SC) also overcame a tight start to win their match 8-4.

Junior Kyla Scott (HMC) dominated her No. 1 singles match (6-2, 6-0) while Tan had no issue trying her hand at No. 2 singles, winning 6-2 and 6-1. Allen was tested by Keren Khromchenko in her No. 3 singles match, dropping the first set 6-3. However, the freshman rose to the occasion and came back to take the second set 6-2 before sealing it with a 10-2 victory in the tiebreaker.

The Athenas will head to San Antonio, Texas for the Trinity Invitational this Friday, Feb. 24. CMS will face University of Texas-Dallas first at 8 a.m. followed by Trinity (Tex.) at 1 p.m. The Athenas will play Washington University the following day at 8:30 a.m.
